Wouldn’t It Be Great To Have Iris Apfel Hanging Around All The Time?

Well Come October, Your Wish Will Come True – Sort of!

Besides her jewelry line for HSN, her cosmetics collab with MAC Cosmetics and a doc film in the works with Albert Maysles of ‘Grey Gardens’, Iris doesn’t know the meaning of slowing down.  At 90, come October, she will be presenting her full out bag collection unlike the bags she’s collaborated on.

Inspired by her eclectic wardrobe, her collection of exotic handbags, featuring Mongolian lamb, hair calf and snakeskin, will retail for between $228 and $398.

Named the ‘Extinctions’ collections, there will be 12 styles to choose from in five colors.  The red number above is one of Apfel’s favorites.  And don’t you worry ladies, if you’re afraid there bags will be tiny, think again, just look at Iris eyeglasses – where else would she fit them?  Of her relentless creativity, Iris told WWD, “I’m used to living on the edge of a volcano. I love what I do. My life is my work.  I have a lot of creative juices — I like to use them up or it chokes me.”  PREACH Momma!

For Úna Burke, It’s All About Leather Studded Curves

For Her ‘Overcome’ A/W 2012 Collection

Unlike Úna Burke‘s past work, which dealt more with construction and restraint, this ‘Overcome’ Fall  collection deals with a different kind of restraint.  Úna’s creations still hug the female silhouette yet with this collection, she works with a lighter hand creating loops and arabesques joined together by beautiful hardware.  What’s even greater is the juxtaposition of hard and soft in using pointed edged shapes along with the open loop shapes.  Úna really knows how to edit herself as hard as it is to think of her in the ‘less is more’ category with such craftsmanship and vision.

Check out the beautiful headpiece, leather cuffs and clutch below – breathtaking!

Get Ready To Be Chairlifted!

Here’s Chairlift‘s music vid for their new single, ‘Amanaemonesia’ (try saying that real fast) from their new album ‘Something’ available now.  The Brooklyn-based self-described “surrealist pop” duo, made up of Caroline Polachek and Patrick Wimberly, managed to create an experience alike no other.  Referencing a conceptual time and place made possible with a custom-made silvery mint green spandex bodysuit, designed by Polachek and stylist friend Kathryn Typaldos, one can be transported either to the future or past, within a red and black space.

With choreography composed by the songstress herself, her awkward yet unique moves simply just work with the catchy lyrics and her amazingly haunting vocals, not to mention also directing with Tom Hines. It doesn’t hurt either that Alejandro Cardenas of Proenza Schouler art directed the whole thing.  Single ‘Amanaemonesia‘ drops June 4.

Since When Was I Supposed To Like Pink So Damn Much?

Before I go on my rant against pink, I would like to apologize for not writing in such a while.  To be perfectly honest, I was restricted to bed rest by my doc.  Apparently, you have to be careful who’s fashion choices you criticize when out after throwing back a few too many cocktails.  Basically, I was at some bar full of a mixed bag of folks – you had your fashionistas, artists and musicians with a dash of typical chicks in body con frocks wearing sky-high heels they still can’t walk in, when there it was.  ’My eyes, my eyes,’ is all my mind was saying to me as this poor soul came into the place dressed in all kinds of wrong.  But I’m a true believer of turning a negative into a positive.  I smilingly go up to her and say, ‘I admire your courage’, to which she replied ‘For What’?  And then, wait for it, I replied, ‘To leave the house wearing that!’  The rest was downhill after that which brings me to my gripe against pink.

For 3days now, I’ve been searching for running sneakers that are not only functional but also cool.  So for me, when sneaker shopping, albeit for running or just chillaxing, I always, always, always go to the men’s section first because all men’s sneakers have the best colorways.  When I turn to the women’s section, if you want to channel Barbie, you’re set as every sneaker that is thought to be colorful has at least one variation of the color pink.

Now, living in a DIY kinda world these days, you’re probably thinking, why not just design your own sneakers including Nikes on Nike.com.  But the trouble with that is you’re shopping for a running shoe and that requires trying on the sneaker for a guaranteed right fit.  Yeah, I know Nike and adidas make running sneakers, but they’re too light in my opinion, for long distance running (Saucony, Mizuno, New Balance + Asics best for running) – not that I’m training for a marathon or nothing, more like 2-3miles a few days a week with the occasional 7mile run – but form and function need to be one.

Take these Men’s Mizuno Wave Creation 13 – great color way right – they look like a force to reckoned with.

Now these women’s Mizuno sneakers in pink don’t look so tough especially with the wretched baby blue + baby pink combo.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love pink but when it comes to my running kicks, that’s where I must draw the line.  Hopefully sneaker designers will offer women the same selection in colorways for ALL sneakers including running, that are apparently, strictly reserved for men.

Cozy Up With This Space, I Mean Sheep Invaders Sweater

By French Knitwear Label Monsieur Lacenaire

Made to look like a houndstooth pattern of sorts, French knitwear label Monsieur Lacenaire knows how to engage and amuse with this knitwear series inspired by the iconic Space Invaders game.  However, they remain true to themselves by adding their own spin to the game by turning the ‘invaders’ into sheep as seen below.

The Sheep Invaders Knitwear series from their Spring/Summer 2012 Collection includes a cardigan and crewneck, granting your ‘sheepish’ look some versatility.

And should you have forgotten how to play the Space Invaders game or in this case, the Sheep Invaders game, you can try to score here on the label’s FB page.  If you choose not to test your skill, you can still pick up either the cardigan or crewneck sweater at Soto.

‘The Lotus And Snake, The Curse Of The White Fox’ Might Sound Like A Kids Fairy Tale

But It’s Actually The Fictitious Story That Lends Itself to Inspire Niels Peeraer’s A/W12 Collection

‘The lotus and the snake, the curse of the white fox’ is about a girl and a boy trying to protect their family crest and traditions which reflects the juxtaposition created by Belgian designer Niels Peeraer for his A/W12 collection.  With graphic intricacies softened by the natural beauty of vegetable tanned bridle leather folded into cute and sometimes ladylike forms, including this adorable satchel, bracelets and necklace with bow detail, it all comes full circle with the perfectly placed brass fittings.

Speaking of perfectly placed brass fittings, check out the center of the headpiece below and necklace and satchel above.  Doesn’t it look like ‘The Third Eye’ – Seems to be a common motif throughout the collection?

Collection will be available for sale in early July/August on NJAL, so stay tuned.
