The Genius That Is All Quentin Jones Is Realized Here With The Artist Using Herself As Canvas.

London Fashion filmmaker, illustrator, animator and basically, master storyteller, Quentin Jones shows us again how gifted she is with her personal project above, her latest animated short. Created on a whim, during free time between gigs for Chanel, Victoria Beckham + Kenzo (a rarity, mind you), Jones, devoid of usual scripts and storyboards, using her signature style of melding cutouts and illustrations, manages to delight, amuse and entertain.

Creating Narratives Through Fashion Comes Real Easy For Edith Palm

Especially With Inspirations Drawn From Egyptian Hieroglyphs

LA based fashion designer, Sara Abromson’s  ’La Peignore Egyptien’ collection for Edith Palm, her most recent to date, simply made me sigh as I love to lose myself in the smallest of details.  And it’s just that which makes this collection so strong and wearable.

My favorite aspect of Abromson’s pieces is how easily she combines contemporary silhouettes with unexpected textiles like the dress below with a one-sleeved top that looks like muslin, with blue ombre towards the waist which then meets a complimentary blue velvet skirt.

But in her choice of textiles, they alone lend themselves to become tactile graphic elements.  In the case below however, the coat in what looks to be wool, covered in graphic shapes and lines in blue, grey, white and brown over a cheetah print tie blouse ties in with the mixing of textures again.

Producing one or two collections per year, it’s no wonder her most admiring quality is made possible, that of customizing her items to fit the needs of today’s woman, a uniquely stylish multi-tasker.  Here are more of her looks:

About Face With Aldo Lanzini Can Take Shape Into So Much More

Especially When Dealing With His Knitted Masks/Textiles

Italian artist Aldo De Agostini Lanzini Aviance, can only be described as a true genius and master craftsman especially upon first sight of his knitted masks/textiles.  Having caught the eye of Missoni with 30 ushers wearing these masks during their S/S11 show (seen below),

(photo: Cool Hunting)

it seemed like the only fit – both use color and pattern flawlessly in knits (for Aldo, however, it’s knits of another kind).

Yet, besides covering the wearer’s face, these masks do so much more than disguise.

Not only do they play with color and shape, they tend to lend themselves as a mode of transport into a trip full of Woven Mayhem And Mysterious Surprise.  ” Definitions are always quite liquid. I use my needle as if I were a sculptor. I move instinctively and I don’t think about the design of my work: I create straight away, ” said Aldo of his work.

A lover’s reach can sometimes be measured by a simple kiss drenched in desire, yet for the lovers in Michael Pate’s video for Palmer//Harding’s A/W12 collection, it’s a lot more complicated.  Separated by a large decaying wall, the two lovers try to reach each other yet all you see are hands and arms with no such luck.

Palmer//Harding‘s focus is on bringing directional design to the shirt, a traditionally neglected garment in a wardrobe and this video does that beautifully.

Presenting Natalia Grzybowski’s ‘Hybrid Printed’ S/S12 Collection

Using minimalist and modern silhouettes with extreme floral textile designs, Sydney based fashion and textile designer Natalia Grzybowski brings us this S/S12 conceptual collection called ‘HYBRID PRINTED’ combining elements of nature and technology through botanicals engineered to perfectly embrace the female form.  By approaching the female body as a hybrid – part female, part flower – Natalia’s strategic textile designs envelope the wearer’s body with dramatic effect while eliminating any textile wastage.  The end result is simply stunning.

True, Mary Katrantzou is the master of reflective patterns and as a pattern whore myself, I simply heart her but Natalia’s approach has subtleties that set her apart.  Take this dress for instance.  Although the designer concentrates her botanical design with the floral center on the dress front, in the back, there are simple petals.   Both designs on both sides then feather towards the waistline somewhat mimicking the soft, sheer skirt of the dress.

Love the bold colors on the front of these shorts and jacket peplum, with a toned down back as the design makes it’s way down to the shorts, displaying wisps of color and detail.

This design strategically places leaves over the wearer’s breasts which I’m assuming is to grant the sheer top some modesty.  Love how the back of the top looks like the model is wearing a kimono.

This is by far my favorite look – the front floral design reminds me of a vintage scientific illustration.  Love how the back’s shape looks like a cape with the sides of the gown coming straight down from the back of the upper arms spilling out into a long train.

Happy Birthday Marc, Hugh + Claire!

Today being the birthday of both Marc Jacobs + Hugh Hefner, director Claire Edmonson, who’s birthday is also today, created this little bit a few years ago entitled  ’Me, Marc + Hugh’.  Love how Edmonson married Marc’s sensibility with slight Playboy bunny sex appeal peppered with hints of tongue-and-cheek.

‘Besides the April 9th birth date, I do see a common thread in our interests, work ethics and ambitions, this film is celebration of that,”  said director Claire Edmonson about this special project

What’s The Name Of Carine Roitfeld’s New Magazine?

CR Fashion Book Of Course, But That Guess Would’ve Been Too Easy

(photo: Inez & Vinoodh)

Due out in September, Carine Roitfeld’s huge secret of what her new magazine was going to be called is finally out.  After ending all of her editor letters with a handwritten ‘CR’ during her 10years at French Vogue, it seemed like the only name that would make sense.

The magazine’s matte cover will have the CR across it with Fashion Book beside it, probably similar to the mock-up below.

There’s no mistaking this will be a fashion magazine but Roitfeld described to WWD that it’s what’s inside her new magazine that counts – as a “celebration of fashion and creativity” from a mix of well-known talents and promising upstarts — and that applies to the photographers, writers, models and stylists.  She also added that fantasy and pleasure are some of the emotions she hopes to evoke with the magazine. “I find that some people in fashion are so blasé. Fashion has to be fun,” she said.

Now the CR Fashion Book premiere issue will definitely be pretty hefty with about 288 pages including 100 pages of advertising, but it’s the personal touches that will set this tome apart from the rest.  There will be handwritten sections including Muses, Skincare, Fitness and Icons, as seen below.  To make it even more personal, Carine will treat these pages as personal stationery with a line through CR at the top of her pages.

Besides featuring established and emerging talents, including the mock-up cover shot by New York-based Argentinian photographer Sebastian Faena, I’m hoping each issue features goodies like this never-before-seen pic of Patti Smith by Bruce Weber wearing this delicate confection of a gown.

Here are a couple mock-up spreads exclusive to WWD:

Although the theme of the September issue is very hush, hush, there will also be an iPad and online component to the CR Fashion Book.

Mirror, Mirror On The Wall, Who’s The Fairest Of Them All?

Well, With This Sweet Mirror set-up, It’s Really A Toss Up.

Today being the first day of the film ‘Mirror Mirror’ starring Julia Roberts, I just couldn’t help but find a mirror that would upstage any wicked queen and I think this one does the trick and then some.  Designed by buhr, a UK furniture brand made up of designer Thomas Bullimore and artist Claire Milton, specializing in handmade furniture, bespoke interiors and kitchens, this piece is sure to label you self-absorbed.

Called the ‘Mirror Table Bench’, it’s beautifully beveled circular mirror is enhanced by a sleek dressing table covered in high gloss lacquer with inlaid polished brass edging and a bench made of solid European Walnut but as with anything good, it’s all about the details dahlings.  Take the two suspended rotating drawers of sorts, lined in hand printed linen with palms, which slide out – genius.

Then you have the back of the mirror, which is lined in hand printed linen with a print called ‘Synchronized Legs’ (also designed by buhr) secured with brass fittings.

Look how cool the legs of the dress table and bench below,  mimic the legs on the fabric above.

So if you want to channel some old hollywood glam or just look good when you’re getting ready to hook up, party or whatevuh,

this is the way to do it up.  Available at 20ltd.
