For the cover of her single ‘Applause’, from her new album ‘ARTPOP’, we see Momma Monster’s made-up face in white accentuated by bright colors, shot by Inez van Lamsweerde + Vinoodh Matadin, the genius photographing duo. Yet, the end result IS a mystery, begging you to ask questions – Why a pantomime with smeared make-up? Is it meant to conjure up sadness or rebellion? Either way, that is the beauty about Lady Gaga – she always keeps you guessing + wondering what will be next, from her music to her new look(s). Her broad range from vocals to self-expression, do nothing but constantly inspire with relentless ferocity.
‘Applause’, co-written by longtime collaborator DJ Shadow, is set to drop Aug 19, which is the presale date of album ‘ARTPOP’. And to think, 9days later, Momma Monster will be headlining the VMAS at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
But seriously, with her name + song title written in that script, under such an ‘in your face’ portrait, reminds me of many album covers from the Seventies + Eighties. Love, love, love!
