Conceptual fashion artist Silvina Maestro relied on science + mathematics in the evolution of the human’s spirit embodied in Hypatia, the first historically noted woman in Mathematics, as her inspo for her ‘Theorema’ collection. Hypatia’s obsession with conical sections was exploited through the many skirt shapes + hems cut to look like ellipses, hyperbolas + parabolas. Just look at the simplicity of her ‘Parabola’ dress (block 3, upper left) with its subtle distinction of an overlapping drape of the skirt on the side.
Silvina’s ‘Hyperbola’ Cotton Skirt (block 1, upper right) is a bit different in how the overlap is a lot more obvious, with the top layer looking like a ruffle. I love how there are so many modern silhouettes, which in some cases marry old with new like the ‘Curvature’ Dress (above left), pairing a Black satin dress with a technical fabric bust. The ‘Pollutio’ Silk Skirt below right, with that incredible image of what looks like clouds, is simply sublime.
It’s no wonder Vogue Italia + The International New York Times have listed Silvina as one of London’s emerging talents.
