Lawrence Rothman: Montauk Fling on Nowness.com
Anything from the mind of filmmaker Floria Sigismondi always manages to stir up excitement as well as awe. In this instance, a music video for Lawrence Rothman’s debut single ‘Montauk Fling’, is definitely no exception. Shot at LA’s Chateau Marmont, whose history of scandals made it an ideal location for Sigismondi’s dark yet sexy imagery. you are transported to a strange visual space. ’A spew of consciousness about a messy love triangle,’ is the way the singer described it.
In it, Rothman is cast as a deranged Elizabeth Taylor while two other women, donning blonde + red wigs, translate their emotions through synchronized moves in a mix of vintage lingerie silhouettes, black + navy bodysuits with poured on latex socks + stilettos, tulle, lots of jewels, angst + red, red lipstick. Rothman’s ‘Elizabeth Taylor’ was channeled through countless hours of studying ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf’ + Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Dracula’. This deranged ‘Liz Taylor’ was a perfect fit for what the filmmaker called a ‘tragic parallel reality where the character’s hunger descends into madness,’ + what a beautiful madness it is.
