Julian Schnabel: In The Course of Seven Days on Nowness.com
It’s always nice to see how the ‘other half’ lives but it’s even more interesting when that ‘other half’ has talent, like artist Julian Schnabel. Today, NOWNESS gives us a rare peek into the artist’s home studio, with Porfirio Munoz’s documentary ’In The Course of Seven Days’, currently showing at the Dallas Contemporary, his first US museum show since the 80s. Schnabel also has two upcoming solo exhibitions. Now if you’re not familiar with Schnabel the artist, you might know him as the award-winning film director of ‘Basquiat’ + ’The Diving Bell + the Butterfly’.
Besides thinking Schnabel is sexy as hell, especially in those yellow-tinted eyeglasses, I’ve always enjoyed his work as an artist – the scale, the colors, + the overall composition. As for ‘Every Angel Has a Dark Side’, his upcoming exhibition at the Dairy Art Centre in London on 25 April, Schnabel tells NOWNESS, ‘This show is a capsule of what happened, a selection of paintings from the past 10 years, more or less. It’s a continuum of ways that I have made marks, used materials + created images.’
‘Every Angel Has a Dark Side’ at The Dairy Art Centre from April 25 – July 27. ’View of Dawn in the Tropics: Paintings, 1989-1990’ opens at the Gagosian Gallery, NY on April 17 – May 31. ’Julian Schnabel: An Artist Has A Past (Puffy Clouds and Strong Cocktails)’ is at the Dallas Contemporary until 10 August.

Tom Of Finland Postal Stamps Too Good To Actually Mail
What better way to celebrate an artist’s worldwide recognition than having their work on postal stamps, especially if it’s artist Touko Laaksonen (a.k.a Tom of Finland)? Well that’s exactly what his native Finland did in creating commemorative stamps featuring Tom of Finland’s homoerotic BDSM drawings.
Graphic designer Timo Barry had the challenging task of picking the right illustrations from Tom of Finland’s 3,500 archival drawings. Barry believes the stamps ‘portray a sensual life force + being proud of oneself’. These stamps definitely are all about being ‘proud’, but the sad irony of it all is how this Nordic country has yet to legalize same-sex marriage + requires surgical sterilization before people can legally change their gender.
The autumn-long release of 7 new sets of stamps from Posti (Finland’s version of the U.S.P.S.), will coincide with The Finnish Postal Museum’s exhibition of the artist’s letters from the 1940s until his death in 1991, opening in September.

Jamie xx: Sleep Sound on Nowness.com
Wake up to Jamie XX’s ‘Sleep Sound’, based on how the deaf hear music through movement. Featuring 13 members of the Manchester Deaf Centre with ages ranging from five to 27 years old, their response to the movement of the artist + the vibrations in the air given off by the song, resulted in this kind of beautiful.
For artist + poet Sophia Mattoli, the incident below is what gave birth to Jamie XX’s ‘Sleep Sound’:
“I was on a train listening to music, getting deep into it, + this girl started staring at me. After a while I took my headphones off + she came up to me, started signing + then wrote me a note to say that she was deaf but could almost feel the music by my movement.”
Hoping to develop this project further, Mattoli tells NOWNESS how the relationship between silence + music is a big part of what she is trying to express with her work.

Plunge into the future with fashion film ‘E_SSENCE’ for Filip Roth. Directed by Piotr Naumowicz, for its SS/14 unisex collection of the same name, the film evokes a gloomy mood portrayed by the protagonist’s guilt. Set in a future with sterile + industrial surroundings, this film expresses the utilitarian + simple silhouettes of the collection. And what about that lamp in the corner – love!

A New York Flex on Nowness.com
Wake up to some serious dance moves in film ‘Flex Is Kings’. Featuring dancers Bones the Machine + DJ Aaron, the kings of Brooklyn’s bone-popping street dance, co-director Michael Beach Nichols tells NOWNESS how the storytelling is dancing, adding ‘You’re not watching different dancers doing the same moves. Each performer summons his background + displays an autobiography of movement.’
The flexing (aka ‘bone breaking’) scene originated on the streets of East New York, Brooklyn. With roots in Jamaican bruk up, filmed over two years, ‘Flex is Kings’ documents the culture around the street dance in the tradition of breaking, krumping + twerking, including flex’s answer to the competitive Harlem vogue-offs, Battlefest.
Wearing sick metal studded gas masks, these bare-chested dancers contort their limbs + pop bones out of sockets, leaving them dangling + slack, creating a sense of both beauty + destruction. In the unseen routine performed for NOWNESS, dancers Bones + Aaron conjure strange, exoskeletal creatures in their own take on flexing. Co-director Deirdre Schoo said, ‘New York is always on the forefront because there’s no room for mediocrity, you’ll get eaten alive. I think the rich history of street dance—from b-boy culture up through flex—means it’s a viable outlet for kids to express themselves,’ + as seen here, it just keeps evolving into more technical moves.
The feature-length documentary ‘Flex Is Kings’ is currently screening at East Village Cinema, NYC until April 10 + at Alamo Drafthouse on April 11, + released on DVD June 6.
Enjoy!
