Mine All Mine on Nowness.com

Wake up with ‘Mine’, a charming + cool interactive, motion-touch short bdirector duo Tell No One AKA Luke White + Remi Weekes. In it, you see underwear clad contemporary dancers from London’s Sadler’s Wells Theater, playing the  game of chase, with grace + elegance + the help of a few designer friends.

The dancers moved wearing designer pieces that include Louis Vuitton, Kenzo + Maison Martin Margiela, since stylist Agata Belcen thought they should be ‘dressed in clothing capable of expressing emotion’, + that it does.  Gender was indistinguishable, where one of the male dancers was put in a women’s look that included a Haider Ackermann dress, looking very sexy.  Italian choreographer Paolo Mangiola was challenged by Tell No One to translate the frenzied desire of online gratification into an impassioned routine, with great success.  As the dancers begin moving, there is a sense of restraint in movement, but as the clothing pieces start to appear then worn, a freedom emerges.

Enjoy!

Spring Forward In These Six Flirty Dresses

image

Dresses are the best go-to items when you can’t decide on what to wear.  You just slip one on, window dress with accessories + boom, you’re out the door.  For Spring, it gets a lot easier as the dresses have a lot less material + the fabric’s weight is very light.  Here are six dresses I’ve selected that are playful, with a subtle touch of sexiness.

(L-R)  KAREN ZAMBOS Francine Dress in vintage inspired orange print | JULIETTE LONGUET Curacao Light Green Dress in silk chiffon, giving you innocent simplicity | KAREN ZAMBOS Jase Dress in a soft relaxed knit perfect for those lazy days |  KAREN ZAMBOS Ryker Dress is a shiny silk dress with both ruffles + sparkle with front rhinestone buttons | SINGLE DRESS Embroidered Peasant Dress

All of these dresses can be found at my Zindigo Facebook Boutique.

(L-R: Lego Castle Bangle, Dot To Dot Cuff, Chunky Lego Bangle)

Designed by London twins Nadia + Zehra, these Lego bangles + cuffs are very wearable, if you can believe it.  Part of their ’See No Evil, Hear No Evil’ collection, these pieces would definitely add that little extra to your Spring wardrobe.  All handmade, multicolored designs form contemporary bangles that are inspired by structure + color, while the cuff is inspired by a favorite childhood activity called ‘dot to dot’, enjoyed by the twin designers.

The ‘Lego Castle’ + ‘Chunky Lego’ Bangles are made of Lego pieces that are glued together, leaving two separate parts where you can open + close the bangle, to take it on + off.  The ‘Dot To Dot Cuff’  features Lego dots on a golden cuff, with the NZ Twins logo engraved inside + is adjustable to fit all sizes.

To make your purchase that much more special, each bangle or cuff is gift wrapped with an illustrated postcard signed by the designer twins.  They are available for purchase at NJAL.

‘Blade Runner’ Winter Wonderland By Gareth Pugh

image

At first glance of Gareth Pugh’s Fall collection, I couldn’t help but think about the future, particularly that of film ‘Blade Runner’.  Seriously, if they decide on a remake, Pugh would be a great contender for costume designer.

There were many silhouettes that although wearable now, could easily be seen being worn in the far, far future.   There was a contemporary poncho + yet, throw in an extra tall 10-gallon hat + tall baggy leather wrapped platform boots (above, look 1) + you’re easily beamed up into that other dimension.

image

There were lots of funnel looks including some that looked like clear latex (row 3, look 3) while others were made of layered squares of what looked like rectangular white plastic discs (row 3, look 2).  I particularly enjoyed a crudely cut fur jacket with a high collar (row 2, look 1).image

For his color palette, Pugh chose to pair cream with white, a combination that although seen before, always looks fresh.  There were also several silver looks, that were so shiny, they almost looked like mirrors.  Now, although Pugh might be considered way too avant-garde for many, there were many pieces in the collection that could easily stand alone + worn by practically anyone + not compromise the designer’s aesthetic integrity.

The Fight on Nowness.com

Here’s the funny + surreal short ‘The Fight’, starring art writer, style guru + Warhol acolyte Glenn O’Brien as the announcer at a boxing match between Belgian model Hannelore Knuts + Ghana-born American boxer-turned-trainer Kwame Davis.  Directed + conceived by Douglas Keeve, the film features the sport of boxing that’s been a mens-only sport until the 2012 Olympics where women’s boxing was first allowed.  Keeve told NOWNESS, ‘This fantastical + comedic bout between Hannelore + Kwame gives a nod to women who continue to break boundaries.’

I love how Glenn introduces Davis as the one in the black trunks + Knuts in the black bra.  What about Knuts’ gear-love her bra with two regular straps + one across, similar to that of a gladiator.  And how great is it that Knuts has costume changes-talk about a game changer?!  But the Twitter birds spinning around Davis when he gets knocked out is just too much.

NOWNESS asked Glenn O’Brien about his memories about the sport + this is what he had to say:

Men + women crowded around their TVs to watch athletes pound each other in the ring, trying to knock the other unconscious, sometimes as us kids looked on. Huge cuts emerging around their eyes. Punches shot blood + sweat into the third-row spectators.

Knocked-out men hitting the canvas or slumping onto the ropes where, if the refs didn’t stop it, their opponent might kill them. I saw Emile Griffith kill Benny “The Kid” Paret on live TV in 1962.  He didn’t actually die until ten days later. Griffith was enraged since Paret called him a maricón [derogatory Spanish slang for a gay person] at the weigh in. There were no ‘out’ athletes then + Griffith has since owned up to swinging both ways outside the ring too. He felt very bad about Benny Paret. Those were very macho days + boxing was even more savage than today’s ultimate fighting.

Glenn O’Brien’s performance is  loosely based on Howard Cosell, the great cliché sportscaster of his youth.

Yazbukey’s Decadent Ottoman Empire

image

For her Fall collection, Yazbukey, the whimsical jewelry designer + fashion darling, conjured up memories of her heritage as inspiration.  Descending from Ottoman royalty but with a diplomatic dad, she never lived in Turkey until this collection.  During her Fall presentation, she said, ‘This collection is sort of my fantasy rendition of Turkey—the Ottoman Empire + decadence.’

image

image

Part of Yazbukey’s vision included a fishnet-clad odalisque, a belly dancer + a soothsayer, complete with rings + turban with eyes.  ’We’re in a bazaar; we’ve tumbled down a hidden passageway + emerged in a back room that’s part Saint Laurent in the Opium days, or maybe it’s the twenties, but in any case, it’s very decadent,’ said the designer.image

The collection includes  include purses + clutches shaped like a clock, a backgammon board, dice, a piano, a flying carpet, + a pack of cigarettes that she’s dubbed Top Kapi.  There were also purple cobra earrings, necklaces + belts.
