Stella Jean Makes A Bold Statement For Fall

image

Every time I see Stella Jean’s new designs, the excitement is overwhelming + her Fall collection is no exception.  There were many looks most might think were overly saturated in pattern, however, I didn’t mind one bit.  A designer known for her exploration of cultural references, for this collection, the show’s notes cited a ‘geisha + mannish attitude’ as the point of narrative, which was obvious by several obi-belted kimono dresses .  The designer hinting at masculinity included a windowpane pattern often identified with a man’s suit, along with several tailored looks including jackets + skirts.

Marni’s Fall Collection Is Full Of Variety + Form

image

For Marni’s Fall collection, designer Consuelo Castiglioni showed no signs of restraint, but in the best way possible.  There were many silhouettes present that breathed life into the many types of women out there.

image

‘Amplification, exaggeration, gentle distortion,’ were written in the designer’s program notes, + that there was.  Form was as much present as it was not, with ruffled looks including adorning tops (row 4, look 4) while wrapping themselves up from the ankles to the waist (row 4, look 2).  image

There were skirts just above the ankle, that were at times plain + sometimes embellished with feathers.  Then you had those looks that were somewhat tailored including a hot pink skirt suit (row 5, look 3) + a fuchsia red sleeveless dress wrapped by a slight black ruffle along the bodice (row 5, look1).

image

Fur also shared the spotlight as a stole, sometimes exposing one shoulder +  as a tri-colored coat, by way of vertical stripes (row 4, look 1) or rough round circles (row 2, look 4).image

Jeremy Scott’s Tongue-In-Kitsch Moschino Fall Collection

image

Of all the designers in the world that could do the late Franco Moschino proud, there’s no one better than Jeremy Scott.  For Scott’s debut collection, the eccentric Moschino wit, popularized in the Eighties, regained new life under the designer’s brilliant direction.

image

Nuanced Eighties excess came alive with gold rope chains decorating necks, while also being used as piping on dresses + jackets.  More gold appeared as buckles on dresses, while bold letters, spelling out MOSCHINO made their mark on boots, purses, baseball caps + belts.  Pop culture references then worked their way towards the finale which was pretty sick.image

Spongebob Squarepants made an appearance,

as did Mickey D’s.  There was a yellow ‘M’ for MOSCHINO, similar to McDonald’s, decorating a blouse, shoes + a french fries box purse.  But what really killed me was the cow print suit with the ‘Happy Meals’ purse.  You just had to ask yourself, ‘Would a cow really wear a ‘Happy Meal’ purse which is probably carrying parts of a family member?’image

Finally, the exquisite gowns with perfectly placed pop cult brands, such as Hershey’s +  Budweiser, made their appearance.  Yet, overall, the nutrition facts label wedding gown above, was my favorite.

For Fall, An Avant-Garde Cabaret Comes To Life At Prada

image

Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s film ‘Lola’, inspired Prada’s Fall collection, with a huge focus on German avant-garde culture.  The film, which deals with Lola from the best cabaret-whorehouse in a German city, comes alive through various silhouettes.  The color palette was very colorful + bright, similar to the many sets + shots throughout the film.

image

Oversized coats paired with jersey over-the-knee dresses + sheer sack dresses suspended from metallic strips + others decorated with bits of long-hair shearling, immortalized the seductress catering to ‘Lola’s’ varied clientele, of low or high class.  Other looks made up of a baggy chevron V-neck + high-necked geometric print shirtdress, gave the impression of a smart woman in control, with her sex appeal still intact, no matter how little skin was showing.  Above all else though, my favorite part of the collection has to b the multicolored shearling coats, especially the gold one below – very clever way to incorporate three colors in an already noticeable coat.

Lucy McRae: Swallowable Parfum on Nowness.com

With growing love affair between technology + fashion, it’s only natural to assume that scent + bio-enhanced beauty is not too far from becoming reality, the subject of today’s fashion film, ‘Swallowable Parfum’.  According to + starring skin-fixated artist + filmmaker Lucy McRae, ‘We are living in an era of no rules; technology is corrupting nature’s ballot, forcing us to redefine our bodies’ limitations + boundaries.’

Developed with synthetic biologist Sheref Mansy, the project explores the  possibility of a consumed capsule that synthesizes with the body to create a biologically enhanced scent.  The scent would then be customized by the wearer, as it reacts to stress, exercise or arousal, all of which prompt perspiration.  Maybe this would give people who sweat excessively a new edge, turning that negative into a positive?  Just the same, this kind of customization provokes debate about the future of the body as a platform for technology.

As a former ballerina, McRae was perfect in conveying a liquid chemical inside a ‘container’ as part of this fragrant capsule’s composite, extending her legs in slow motion, while emphasizing the muscle definition of her legs.  Dancer Rachel Coulson inspired the choreography.  McRae told NOWNESS how Coulson has ‘this incredible ability to reach shapes with her body that are beyond human,’ adding,’ The choreography aims to simulate weightlessness, an underwater body moving within a particle atmosphere that is foetal, fluid, surrendering the body to science + technology.’

NOWNESS asked McRae what notes would stress, pumped + sexy have + she replied: ‘Stressed–the scent of an infinite horizon; pumped–the smell of an explosion in reverse; sexy–the aroma of brushing past a stranger.’  And based on this response, it would be even more amazing to feel how you smell simultaneously, but that would be another cosmetic bio-tech conversation altogether.

Talk about being a true beauty CONSUMER!
