My Heart Goes ‘Pitter Pattern’ For Maison Martin Margiela’s Couture Spring Collection

image

There’s nothing like a great pattern to get me started + when I got a look at Maison Martin Margiela’s Couture Spring collection, full of pattern + texture, I went nuts!  Renowned for breathing new life into found garments + objects, in the vein of it’s founder, for this couture collection, the house used collectible vintage fabrics, mostly from private estates, along with repurposed baseball mitts + tinsel.

There were Fifties textiles designed by Frank Lloyd Wright on long + lean bustier robes (row 2, look 1), still with their raw white edges intact showing where the patterns end, Raoul Dufy’s “Les Violons” motif, which the painter produced for Bianchini-Férier, on a wide-legged pantsuit (row 1, look 3), + coats made from thick tapestries, often telling stories like the one bearing Paul Gauguin’s exotic ‘La femme du roi’ (row 2, look 1).

There were also looks that featured sequined stripes(row 2, look 4), a sick crop top made with vintage sailor tattoo patches sewn together, with some going down the model’s arms (row 1, look 4), as well as embroideries created with small random found objects including colorful chains, pearls + buttons (row 2, look 2)

I especially loved the arm sleeves that looked like big eyes (below), complete with long bottom lashes in what looks like hair, creating a cool fringe effect  – now THAT’S how to wear an Evil Eye!

Ready Yourself For Affordable Vivienne Westwood’s Ethical Africa Bags At ASOS

I love a bargain, especially when there’s real value.  But when you throw in proceeds from sales going to a worthy charity, I have to control myself on how many to buy simply to help.  Well, that’s exactly what Vivienne Westwood is doing with her cool Ethical Africa bags.  To make sure everyone can own a bag + help, Westwood’s partnering with ASOS.

If you can believe it, prices are starting at just £58/$78, which is nothing compared to what anything Westwood costs.  The bag designs for this new collection include unisex rucksacks, cloth bags + totes.  The bags will feature graphic prints including an anchor, Westwood’s signature Orb + squiggle-print.

Vivienne Westwood’s Ethical Africa bags are available this Friday, January 24th.

Here’s the fashion film for Charlie Le Mindu‘s ‘Stronger’ SS/14 ‘haute coiffeur’ collection featuring a model whipping her fluorescent hair at warp speed, with a ‘Paris Is Burning’ nuance.

For the show, Charlie Le Mindu sent models dressed in black latex catsuits while donning fluorescent hairstyles, down a darkened catwalk.  Some of the fantastical looks included a jellyfish, birds + a tropical fish.

Ever wonder what your online habits would look like to someone spying on you?  Well, that’s exactly what inspired Holly Herndon’s music video for the title track ‘Chorus’.  In it, director Akihiko Taniguchi took Herndon’s samples from her daily internet browsing—YouTube, Skype, + other audio – to create video.  The B-side “Solo Voice” was done in a single take.

I love the retro feel of the animation + the realness of Herndon’s environment – great to see she didn’t decide to stage the perfect workspace for the video’s sake – mine would be a lot worse.

Enjoy!

Alexis Mabille’s Spring Couture Collection Brings Greco-Roman Goddesses To Life

image

Alexis Mabille sought literal inspiration from Greco-Roman goddesses for his Spring Couture collection. A lot of the looks included draped dresses worthy of any Greek mythology flick, with a few exceptions.  One would be the above white jersey dress, with a portrait neckline, while the bodice was literally illustrated, with tiny amber-colored vertical crystals scattered across.

image

Another exception was the dress below.  Mabille’s pleating expertise was demonstrated throughout the collection, but in this other white jersey dress, the simplicity of the design paired with a teardrop shaped cutout, exposing part of the torso, gave subtle sex appeal to an elegant silhouette.

Here’s an excellent example of the dangerously weird yet brilliant poetry of filming in slo mo.  German musician + Youtube personality Flula Borg decided to film himself beatboxing in slow motion + the result is kind of vulgar yet funny – Flula says his lips look ‘like the vagina of a brontosaurus,’ but I guess that’s as true as the existence of a brontosaurus.

I wonder if that’s what qweefing looks like?
