How Frankie Knuckles Even Touched Barack And Michelle Obama

Last month’s passing of Frankie Knuckles touched a lot of us, including myself, triggering random lapses of crying throughout the day I found out.  Yet, never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined a tribute from a U.S. President + a First Lady, but that just goes to show you how super cool the Obamas really are.

Barack + Michelle Obama’s open letter was put on DJ David Morales’ Facebook page – Morales + Knuckles had worked together over a number of years on various remixes including Alison Limerick’s ‘Where Love Lives‘ + his agency, Def Mix, represented Knuckles.  Morales said online, “Frankie’s memorial service was emotionally special. To have his friends, family + the Governor speak about Frankie goes to show the impact he has had on people,” + the worldwide outpour of tributes from musicians + artists who worked with him is a testament to that.

But it shouldn’t be that much of a surprise as Obama’s adulation for Knuckles was instilled a few years earlier.  As Illinois state senator, Obama pushed for the street where the The Warehouse once stood, to be renamed Frankie Knuckles Way + in 2004, Obama also declared August 25 as Frankie Knuckles Day.

Wake up + enjoy the dizzying effect of fashion film ‘Pre-Veiled’ featuring Lauren Geogehan‘s AW/14 ‘The New Sisterhood’ collection, inspired by Pre-Raphaelite paintings-dark + sinister, depicting mythical tales.  For the most part, tales of heart break, + deceit depicted in these Pre-Raphaelite paintings were almost always painted by men, with the most famous three artists being part of a creative collective called, ‘ The Brotherhood’.   For Lauren however, she wanted to design a collection focused on creating a dramatic modern day Pre-Raphaelite story for beautiful, but STRONG women, giving birth to ‘The New Sisterhood’.

With Art Direction + Flowers are by Westwood + Photography by Enzo Mercedes, the handbags, leather underwear + halo designed by Lauren lighten the mood by the juxtaposition of soft with hard.  Sure the leather works might appear to be soft but their shapes as underwear + a halo, graze the surface of BSDM among the beautiful floral arrangements.

Below are some beautiful stills that further reinforce the feel of the film.

Enjoy!

Get Fit, Swim + Walk Down The Aisle In Norma Kamali Active SS/2014

For her Active SS/2014 collection, Norma Kamali took many factors into consideration than just fitness with a color palette of black, white + steel gray.  Beauty was achieved by her simple yet practical shapes while support was addressed with flattery + function.  Mesh inserts also played a big role in her designs by allowing the wearer to breathe, sweat + aerate while working out, like her tank below (3).  Her bottoms on the other hand, had mesh placed in areas that worked with performance while the body is reacting when it heats up.

Now lets take a look at some of her designs that although not for the shy, you can mix + match the pieces to suit your needs + accommodate your comfort level.

image

1 This LONG SLEEVE CREW NECK TEE in black mesh, shows off your killer bra + to really play ‘show off’, pair it with DIAGONAL LEGGING WITH MESH INSERT  SLEEVELESS CREW NECK DRESS could double as a great swim coverup For Norma, nothing’s better than a good tank that offers support + allows you to move without feeling squashed, especially one that comes with a compression bra that creates shape + not flatten like this RACER ACTIVE TANK.  Pair that with a SIDE STRIPE CAPRI WITH MESH INSERT + you’ll command respect.  4 Now if you’ve started working out sooner than the rest of us + have killer abs, the LONG SLEEVE MIDRIFF TOP is the way to go in black mesh.  As for bras, there are two options to choose from – The JOG BRAThe DOUBLE STRAP JOG BRA  are so stylish, I would opt to wear them out under something sheer than to the gym.

image

When it comes to her swimsuits, Norma liked the mixing of fitness + beauty themes with graphics like her mesh + matte combination.  In a way, she sees them as sculpture, artfully sculptured 360degrees around the body.  In the SPLICED BANDEAU MIOyou see hints of skin through mesh inserts, both front + back The RACER TEE DEEP V MIO has a deep V in matte while the straps + back are in mesh The V NECK SPLICED MIO only has a deep v mesh insert, but from behind, it’s nothing but backless with minimal straps for less distraction.image

After all your working out pays off, be the envy of all + show it off on your big wedding day in killer style in this RACER TEE DEEP V FISHTAIL GOWN, a modern take on the wedding gown.

Max Warsh’s Mixed Media Paintings Inspire Mandarin And Oriental’s Summer Collection

image

For summer, Mandarin And Oriental offers simple silhouettes with clever nuances, including the pants above with legs partly made of mesh fabric + the sleeveless dress below, with chiffon cutouts.  But it’s not surprising, as designer Peggy Tan found inspiration in the geometric decal patterned mixed media paintings by artist Max Warsh, by interpreting his vision of a modern city as a collage.

Not only do these same geometric shapes show up as a print throughout the collection including the tote above + the all-around print looks below, but they also appear in the impeccable tailoring of each piece.  For purchase, you can head over to WE ARE SELECTERS.

Daughter x Tate Britain on Nowness.com

Wake up  + get swept away by Daughter‘s late night recital of ‘Smother’ at London’s Tate Museum.  Set within the Tate’s current ‘Ruin Lust‘ exhibition, mapping four centuries of art’s infatuation with the abandoned + the decaying, the one image below inspired the ‘Smother’ version you hear above.

The eerie + ominous ‘Azeville’, by British artists Jane + Louise Wilson was thought of as ‘a pretty terrifying picture to look at, the stark monochrome + the heavy intimidating concrete frame’, by Daughter’s ethereal front woman Elena Tonra.

Along with Swiss-born guitarist Igor Haefeli (minus the band’s drummer Remi Aguilella), this bare-bones version of ‘Smother’ perfectly captures not only the dark mood of the French Nazi bunker in the picture, but also that sense of loss + fading memory.  ’We felt that the song shares this idea of decay,’ Tonra says, adding, ‘Whether it is an abandoned man-made structure or a human body, everything will eventually be accepted back into the earth, however cold + brutal it once was.’

‘Smother’ is from their debut album on 4AD, ‘If You Leave’.

Enjoy!

The ‘Madame’ Responsible For Emilio Pucci And Philippe Starck’s Sick Threesome With Kartell

image

Well, isn’t she just worth the indiscretion?  I mean look at her – could you ever go wrong with Pucci, Starck or Kartell!

The latest ‘Madame’ chair iteration was created for Salone del Mobile 2014 through a designer collaboration between Kartell, Emillio Pucci + Philippe Starck.  Called ‘Madame – World of Emilio Pucci Edition’, Pucci was to upholster one of Philippe Starck’s newest designs for the brand, the padded polycarbonate ‘Madame’ chair.

image

Chairs depicting the surroundings of four world-class flagship Pucci stores: Paris’ Avenue Montaigne, Rome’s Piazza di Spagna, New York’s Fantasia + Madison Avenue, come to life with colorful prints from Pucci’s scarf collection.  With a padded seat + a soft, rounded back + armrests, sitting on a polycarbonate base, while embraced in an all-around Pucci print, what’s not to love?

The ‘Madame – World of Emilio Pucci Edition’ is part of Pucci’s Cities of the World project, created to celebrate its boutiques worldwide with limited-edition scarves printed with abstract designs of city squares, plazas + skylines in the style of the Italian fashion house.
