Michael Dotson Plays With Painted Patterns

‘Couch Painting’

Addicted to patterns of all types, when I saw Michael Dotson‘s paintings, I gagged.  A lot of which look like digital art, including ‘Couch Painting’ above, bearing a likeness to glitch-art, it’s hard to believe it was created with a paintbrush + acrylic paint.

‘Gesture Control’

A lot of them also brought to mind the sticky + sloppy artificial sweetness of the make-believe life so craved by the lead characters in Harmony Korine‘s most recent flick, ‘Spring Breakers’, full of neon zeal + fantasy.  Others however, reminded me of past + present Kenzo patterns like Natalia Stuyk‘s work for Kenzo’s Resort 2013 ‘Electric Jungle’ video as seen below.

Here’s more of Dotson’s work to enjoy.

For SS/13, Riyka’s Focus Is Triangular

image

image

Combining new + recycled materials, to create simple shapes, Riyka manages to stand out for Spring with their ‘It’s All About The Jig’ SS/13 collection.  By using geometric shapes, specifically the triangle + vibrant colors, in composing modern silhouettes, like the denim shift with a faux drop waist in contrasting materials (row2, look3), it’s obvious that Riyka is all about fun.

Morning Wood By Aron Demetz: ‘Distressed Wood Figures’

image

Aren’t these distressed wooden figures just gorgeous?  Created by Italian artist Aron Demetz for ‘The Tainted’ exhibition at Gazelli Art House in London, the way he distresses his wood figures looks like he’s shrouded them with a new type of textile.  Some look like they have plenty of stacked ruffles similar to a mille feuille effect, while others look like raw edge silk stitched together in random harmony.

Quentin Tarantino Gets The Penguin Treatment

image

Filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, has often been showered by accolades for his films as being pinnacles of pop-culture + later, American cinema ‘classics’.   So it didn’t come as a surprise to see graphic designer + illustrator Sharm Murughia‘s reinterpretation of Tarantino’s films/screenplays as Penguin Classics.

Not bad right, considering he’s in good company with some of literary history’s finest like Truman Capote’s Breakfast At Tiffany’s, Anthony Burgess’s Clockwork Orange, Vladimir Nobokov’s Lolita, Niccolo Machiavelli’s The Prince + Lewis Carroll’s Alice In Wonderland.  These heavyweights not only affected literary styles + genres, but pop culture alike, similar to many of QT’s flicks.

Celebrate Heath Ledger’s Legacy With This Limited Edition Commemorative Tee

image

Designed by Heath’s sister Elana Rosa, the tee features Heath with his skateboard.  Shot by NY Photographer Ben Watts (Actor Naomi Watt’s bro) + a close friend of the actor’s, the image displays Heath’s down-to-earth yet fearless character.  Shot down in the LA river, it was a pic more about having fun rather than being fashionable or looking good, according to the photographer.  Yet, no matter what, it still makes for a great looking tee – I imagine it would look even cooler if the sleeves were cut off as well as the collar to give it that ‘worn’ look to match the ‘vintage’ filter look of the pic itself.

image

Watts says on the Heath Ledger site, ’ Heath loved surfing + skating so I knew it would make for a great day of pics which Heath would enjoy.’

The first Heath Ledger product to be approved by Heath’s estate + endorsed by his family, proceeds of the sales go to support Channel 7 Australia Telethon Trust, The Australian’s in Film Organisation + The Heath Ledger Scholarship.  Available for $105AUD ($109USD) on The Heath Ledger site.

Colors black + white fight it out for Litkovskaya SS/13 collection.  A project of cooperation + confrontation, equanimity + self-irony, contradictory concepts mixed together between Litkovskaya v. Bevza.  Belts, bags, shoes, are as much armor as they are weapons.

Both designers Lilliana Litkovskaya + Svetlana Bevza use minimalism, complex cuts + monochrome colors as common tools to make their ideas real, creating conflict + contradiction, making their work that more interesting, according to Litkovskaya.  ’With the polarity of opposites represented by black + white, being strong contenders with very different POVs, showing two separate integrities of the inner world,’ commented designer Svetlana Bevza.
