Damir Doma Gives Utility A Fresh New Look For SS/13

(photo: Style.com)

For Paris Fashion Week, Damir Doma managed to take some utilitarian military motifs and give them a whole new spin for S/S13.  Using Yves Klein blue on drab olive looks worthy of a paratrooper, especially as a dominant color throughout and using different textures including leather and silk, makes this collection easily wearable the woman who likes to make a statement with little to no effort.

With various shapes including pants and skirts with an origami-like waist, a kimono style jacket with a wide fabric obi ‘belt’ accent (far look) to a jumpsuit accented with a brown belt (far right), the Damir Doma woman will have the ease of casual wear with luxe details come Spring.

Check out Kate Upton, looking sweet as bubble gum, starring in “Hush Little Baby, Don’t You Cry,’ a film by Bruce Weber which relates to a fashion story in Issue 1 of Carine Roitfeld’s CR Fashion Book. Referred to as a story about second chances and active imaginations, you’ll be swept away by it’s overwhelming innocence full of babies, puppies, polka-dot tulle + baby chicks – Loving the guy in the unicorn costume.

64th Emmy Awards 2012 – Hits & Misses

The awards season was underway last night with the 64th Emmy Awards and although drawn out, as usual, the best part of it all was the fashion.  Now mind you, one would think these Hollywood starlets would dazzle as brightly as the coveted Emmy awards statue but unfortunately, very few did which caused a pinched nerve on my neck from shaking my head so furiously and thinking, ‘WTF’?

That being said, I rounded up a few of many of the evening’s fashion faux pas as seen here.

First we have Hayden Panettiere in Marchesa which although a great fit, her dress looked like it was just the bottom shell and she just happened to get tangled up in some tulle, cut the end + walked onto the red carpet.  Lucy Lui however, as much as I love her + think she’s one of the most beautiful women in the world, her Versace gown looked too comical + too much like a disco ball – I’ve never seen sequins so large – have you?!  Nicole Kidman’s Antonio Berardi dress, although sparkly and I love me some sparkle, made me yawn and Ashley Judd’s hair, just made my eyes sting causing me not to be able to see past her shoulders which as you can see, was not much of a loss anyway.

The hits of the evening were few and far between but here are my ultimate faves.

Edie Falco killed it in Stella McCartney with color blocking punctuated by a cutout back and gold belt.  Allison Smith of ‘GIRLS’ nailed it in Oscar de la Renta.  Kelly Osborne made me melt in her lavender melange made up by her Zac Posen dress all the way up to her lavender-grey coif.  And Ellen Degeneres looked absolutely gorgeous in her Valentino suit.

But with the mention of Allison Smith of ‘GIRLS’,  a show I vowed never to watch amidst all the press before airing and yet found myself glued to the TV every Sunday night (dvr my ass!), I was disappointed.

Lena Dunham has definitely wowed me before when she paired an emerald green Wes Gordon dress with bright pink heels at the Met Ball yet here, I was confused.  Although she looks beautiful and her Prada dress is too, I think it was ill-fitting for her body type.  Maybe if the waistline had been dropped a tad or a less full skirt, it wouldn’t have looked as if the dress was wearing her.  Then there’s poor Zosia Mamet in a black + white Bibhu Mohapatra directional number which I felt was too mature for her, accessorized by a hairstyle that didn’t help.

In the end, it made for good television, on mute!

Form, Pattern & Texture Play Well Together In The Marni RTW Spring 2013 Collection

Designer Consuelo Castiglioni  demonstrated calculated restraint with hints of whimsy for the Marni RTW Spring 2013 collection.  You can never expect to be disappointed by Marni and for Spring, you’re urged to play ‘dress-up’ with an array of silhouettes, textures and a few patterns to choose from.

Marni’s RTW Spring 2013 collection included, structured shorts softened with rounded hems, sometimes worn under peplum tops, long tunics over A-line skirts and a few dresses.  The textures varied from an almost metallic black jacquard to leather and as far as pattern was concerned, Consuelo blessed us with graphic statements including a slight transparent windowpane plaid and a punchy floral pattern reminiscent of the 70’s

The designer’s show notes read ‘Sparseness As Elegance’ in reference to the simplicity of the lines and the abundance of solids throughout her collection – And who could argue with that!?

Check out the deliciously captivating video for Alt-J‘s ‘Fitzpleasure’ from their debut album, ‘An Awesome Wave’.  Belgian artist Wim Delvoye was responsible for creating this contemporary baroque environment you see throughout the video, (a signature of his) while COSA production and director Guillaume Cagniard’s eye managed to capture all the right angles of arrested emotion.

Amazing to think it only took one day to film!

My LOVE For Fashion Goes Skin Deep, Literally!

Throughout all that was brewing around last week’s NYFW, one of the many things that stood out to me as truly cool and unique was jewelry designer Pamela Love‘s Pop-up Tattoo Parlor over at MilkMade’s Digital Bar, part of the MADE Fashion Week Weekend for her Spring 2013 collection – talk about presentation!

(photo: Pamela Love)

Already inked myself and a huge admirer of Love’s work, I couldn’t pass on this opportunity – a free tattoo by either of Pamela’s renowned tattoo artist friends, Minka Sicklinger, seen here (with Love) + menswear designer, Patrick ‘Fish’ King (below).

Proposed as an open invitation to Love’s friends and public, I had to act fast, reserve my appointment + cross my fingers I’d be lucky enough to get in.  The only catch – your tattoo had to be of their design, not yours.  The tattoo designs were chosen by Pamela + her husband, Matthew Jameson Nelson Love, which included lunar cycles, Day of the Dead + traditional Navajo and Zuni symbols as seen below.

Now many of you might think, ‘jewelry and tattoos I don’t get it,’ but based on Love’s designs and general esthetic, it’s not hard not to imagine wearing a tattoo along with one of her pieces.  Pamela told Milk MADE, ‘I’ve had the idea to do a tattoo parlour for a longtime.  I love tattoos, I have 17 and wanted to do something inspired by the collection that was more interactive.”

Wonder how Love will top this for the next NYFW?

Oh, + by the way, I did manage to get on the list and got this feather tattoo on my inner right wrist by ‘Fish’ (Patrick ‘Fish’ King).  While I was getting my tattoo, ‘Fish’ mentioned how I would never find myself in that type of setting or scenario getting a tattoo, making the whole experience that much more fun.

What do you think?

DVF Gets Geek Chic For New York Fashion Week With The Help Of Google In This Short Film called ‘DVF [through Glass]’

Google, the juggernaut of all things cool and ahead of the curve, gave DVF these glasses

called Google Glass to capture her Spring 2013 fashion show for NYFW, creating Google’s first published video.  Tech-specs, that are not only internet connected, can now act as a camera by filming from the perspective of the wearer – doesn’t hurt either that they look sleek and cool.

(photo: Thomas Hawk)

Basically, we the viewers are taken for a ride through DVF’s Spring 2013 NYFW show from the catwalk, to behind the scenes with make-up artists, stylists and Diane herself.  (Doesn’t she look ever so cool and beautiful wearing her pair above, in a still from the film short?)

Playing on Youtube, here’s Google’s description of the video:

Experience the DVF Spring 2013 show at New York Fashion Week through the eyes of the people who made it happen—the stylists, the models and Diane von Furstenberg herself. All the footage you see here was filmed using only Glass, Google’s latest technology that lets you capture moments from a unique, new perspective. See what happens when fashion and technology come together like you’ve never seen before.

Unfortunately, us mere mortals will have to wait until 2013 to own a pair.
