My Nightly Embalming Beauty Regimen For Summer

When I think of my nightly beauty regimen, I liken it to being embalmed because let’s face it, all of these things we do lead to one thing + one thing only, self-preservation! Bear in mind though, it varies from season to season, so for today I’m going to address Summer.

Stage One, with two parts: WASHING THE FACE – I usually rely on one of three facial cleansers:
Part OneNeutrogena Pore Refining Exfoliating Cleanser

image

Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré (24-Hour Miracle Cream)

image

Key West Aloe Gentle Aloe Facial Cleanser

image

Part Two – To make sure my face is squeaky clean, I dab this toner onto a cotton ball + rub it on my face until its clean.  You might have to do this a few times.

Step TwoMOISTURIZE SKIN since it’s always thirsty. So to quench the thirst, I use the following two masks, sometimes one after the other, if not just one for the night, several times a week. There are two by Mario Badescu that I simply adore:

Enzyme Revitalizing Mask

image

Super Collagen Mask

image

Stage Three: covers four areas + without this step, you might as well have your wrinkles pay for half your rent.  Now this is where the embalming begins!

FACE, NECK + DÉCOLLETAGE: A few drops of this Mario Badescu wonder will do the trick.

Peptide Renewal Serum

BREASTS: Because it’s Summer, your girls will get more sun than usual, thanks to tank, v-neck or strapless tops. Add that to your occasional beach visits + come September, you’ll be crying for not having moisturized. That said, this oil by Dr. Hauschka is perfect for breasts. Guaranteed to make your skin supple, which explains its success in preventing pregnancy-induced stretch marks, do you really need anything else?  (Remember, these are all preventative measures.)

Blackthorn Toning Body Oil

Step Four: FEET become high maintenance, with sandal season in full gear + with this cream, you can’t go wrong. Sadly, my heels tend to crack, but with this, I saw a difference in 2 days!  For Reals!

Neosporin Eczema Essentials Daily Moisturizing Cream

Step Five (optional):  RID OF SCARS +/ BLEMISHES: This animal fat remedy, although smelly, not only works super fast + it also works on old scars too. So for any of you ladies out there sharing your beds, you might have to mention this disclaimer. (I’ve grown accustomed to the odor.) I do this step all year round + I’m also very single – connection? Nah!

Hope this helps make your Summer that much better!

The Metaphors Created Between Photographs

The great photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson once said, ‘During the work, you have to be sure that you haven’t left any holes, that you’ve captured everything, because afterwards it will be too late,’ but as for Stephen Posen’s photographs in ‘Ellipsis: Dual Vision By Stephen Posen’, published by Glitterati Incorporated, it’s exactly those holes that make his work stand out, leaving a lasting impression.

But the same goes without saying about metaphors, which is what these eighty seven images therein are likened to. In the foreword, Colin Cheney, the internationally regarded poet, describes the two parts of a metaphor as being the tenor + the vehicle. But how Posen makes the connection between two shots that don’t mix-‘as with a metaphor, the viewer is left to close the connection.’

Just look at the two pics above where you have a putting green flagstick paired with the side profile of a woman with wingtip eyeliner. At first glance, you look at both pics + wonder where’s the connection but for me it was the shadow cast by the flagstick to that of the wingtip eyeliner. True, there is no real relation between them both, but it is this conclusion that fills the gap for me.

His daughter Alexandra Posen, a visual artist, wrote, ‘Within the series Title, he constructs poetic phrases by pairing images –  each image receive its full weight + identity face-to-face with its chosen twin.’ By redoubling his work of perception + pairs photo-to-photo, Alexandra said her father was able to find unexpected parallels + echoes amongst visions.

What’s even most amazing about Posen’s work is how it would sometimes take months or even years apart, for that moment of realization of connection between two photos come alive, making his process that much more intriguing. This is probably how ‘He lovingly toys with the substance of each captured picture-its perceptual bones, contextual flesh + the mystery it exhales,’ according to daughter Alexandra, allowing him to decide which pics to keep for however long + I’m assuming, discard all the rest.

The line between the abstract + figurative but involving a lot more thought, bridges the juxtapositions  of the kind of mixed metaphors Stephen always appreciated. Not only will this photography book often entertain, with its mysterious pairings throughout, regardless of how many times you’ve looked at it, there will always be some nuance found in the Stephen’s pictures.

How Short Film ‘Edifice’ Translates A Couple’s Relationship Through Dance

When it comes to relationships, there are always stages that are synonymous with most of them: Stage 1 is considered the ‘honeymoon’, since all you do is stay in bed for the first 2 months, just enjoying each other sexually, over + over again; Stage 2 starts making its way home around the middle of month 3, when reality starts to overpower thoughts of your last great orgasm(s) with work schedules, laundry, grocery shopping, etc., as a bitter reminder you finally have to get out of ‘bed’; + Stage 3, if it eventually sours, after how long it is, depending on your compatibility, arguing sets in, disagreements become the norm, leaving you with no other choice but to get out + that’s just a mild version of how things could play out. Now imagine interpreting the dynamics of this same relationship through a symbolic ballet? Well that’s exactly what short film ‘edifice’ does so beautifully.

The film soundtrack, ‘Then Suddenly, Everything Changed’ by Alaskan Tapes, perfectly conveys the emotions of this couple relationship choreography. As to how to get it just right, director Rogerio Silva asked dancers Carmine De Amicis + Harriet Waghorn to love each other, slot together, support each other, to edify, tear apart + break up, with no tear in sight.

Enjoy!

A Womenswear Editorial Full Of High Fashion In Motion

For this KALTBLUT exclusive womenswear editorial, photographer Annie Lai manages to infuse both background + subject in a beautiful juxtaposition of texture + patina, with various backgrounds to really set the mood. Featuring model Lisa Marlier, stylist Yun Nam Ho sets the perfect tone with fashions by Issey Miyake, Rachel O’Mahony, MingJanet, Shabnam Eslambolchi + Scottacus Anthony. My favorite shots are those that have movement, allowing you to focus on more than just the clothes which become blurred as a result.

Then again, it’s hard not to love them all when you have such beautiful clothes styled so flawlessly!
Enjoy!

Frida Kahlo’s Ordinary Side On Display

image

A longtime fan of the late Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, I am very familiar with all the pain she endured, beautifully demonstrated through bright colors + plenty of symbolism, in each of her paintings. But Japanese photographer Ishiuchi Miyako, has taken a different approach in showcasing Frida by creating a photography series out of Frida’s many personal items + wardrobe, only discovered in 2004, found hidden in a tiny, spare bathroom under the instruction of her husband Diego Rivera, in her Blue House in Mexico City.

image
image
image
image

Regarding Frida, Miyako told Another magazine, ‘If I met her, I wouldn’t ask any questions. I would only want to stare at her + touch her body,’+ rightfully so, as Kahlo, is still a woman of much mystery. Now, what makes Miyako’s series for the Michael Hoppen Gallery special is how she’s managed to photograph things that show the artist’s ordinary side, sparking her imagination + inspiration, including shoes that embraced her blow with polio demonstrating one heel higher than the other + an ornately decorated prosthetic leg,

hoops decorated with birds

+ empty Revlon nail polish bottles.

So if you happen to be in London during May 14 – July 12th, ‘Frida by Ishiushi Miyako’ will be on display at the Michael Hoppen Gallery.

Five Ways To Keep Warm In The Office When The AC Gets Cranked Up

(Unfortunately, after much technical difficulty, I am finally back up + running.)

As we come closer to knowing hot weather is here to stay, we have to start preparing ourselves for that blasted air conditioning in the office. Usually, it has to be something that can easily live in your desk with no chance of wrinkling or small enough to hang somewhere without causing much intrusion. So here are five cool alternatives to your typical ‘go-to’ the the button down cardigan, for when the temperature plummets at work.

Why not kick it up a notch with this Bright Light Leather Jacket by Cleobella, available at Free People, in a beautiful bronze metallic color? Complete with cropped sleeves, asymmetrical seaming, + off-center zip closure with additional snap buttons, not only will it add that unexpected punch to any look, it can go from day to night in a blink.

image

With Citizens of Humanity’s kimono-inspired Kylar Denim Jacket, available at Browns, you get the the ease of denim minus any tailoring. With its fabric belt, you’ll be able to cinch your waist, whether wearing a skirt or a pair of skinny pants, to emphasize its slouchy fit.

image

As far as bomber jackets go, the possibilities are endless, as we’ve seen these past few seasons. Of course, when it comes to most offices, there’s just so little one can get away with except when it comes to chambray. With this Chambray Bomber Jacket, available at the Loft, you’ll be able to give a break to your overly polished look by scrunching up the sleeves + wearing it open.

image

Now I know I’ve dismissed cardigans as your typical ‘go-to’ but this cardigan is just too good not to whip out + throw on. The Ladder Knot Cardigan by Korlekie, available at NOT JUST A LABEL, is just a stunner which might as well work double duty as a shield against all the envious looks you’ll get once you put it on. Knitted in luxurious viscose thread, this copper colored cardigan, with its sumptuous origami-like knots adorning the front opening, paired with a unique laddering technique, highlighting the contours + curves of the shoulders for an elegant look, makes it that much more blasphemous to just call it a cardigan. It also has an open slit up each side, which allows for additional comfort + ease, which can be utilized for tying or knotting the it at the front, for variety.

image

And finally, there’s this Shimmer Sweater available at Zara.  A sand colored V-neck style sweater, with cuff + side slits, you’ll be able to pair this sweater with both pants + skirts, no matter what the length or width.
