Wild Rose on Nowness.com

Isn’t this film called ‘Rose’, by Marlene Marino just beautiful, starring Rose McGowan?  Along with the aged quality of the film, it’s lighting + McGowan’s intuitive moves, with the occasional spin, throughout her L.A. home, just made for the perfect short film.  Although Rose is nude for a majority of the film, there’s a subtle sexiness to it all.

With it’s heartfelt music (‘The Earth Prelude No.1 In E Minor’ by Ludovico Einaudi) playing in the background, for me, watching Rose move, sparked memories of the late Little ’Edie’ Beale of Grey Gardens, as well as Marilyn Monroe.

Photos That Show What Sex ‘Really Looks & Feels Like’

image

For photographer Sarah Anne Johnson, taking great photos is just not enough. You see, the artist loves to draw, burn + scratch all over her pics, giving them that little bit extra.  For her ‘Wonderlust’ series, the intimacy of couples having sex is heightened, if not celebrated, by utilizing these tactics.

It first started with the random selection of willing participants or couples.  Luckily, a lot of the couples didn’t need much direction, making the photo’s composition that much easier to attain.  Since photos tend to be two-dimensional, by Johnson’s own admission, altering the surface just made the feelings more visible.

Johnson felt this was a true way of showing what intimacy feels like both physically + psychologically.  ’Intimacy is the perfect subject for that exploration because it looks different than it feels + it feels different then it looks, (how it really looks – not how porn makes it look),’ the artist told whitewall magazine.

‘Wonderlust’ will be on display at the Julie Saul Gallery until Dec. 21st.

Selfies Come To Life in 3D

image

Selfies, never get old + they’re known for nurturing that ego maniac within us all, like Rihanna, cray cray addict no.1, thanks to Instagram.  But artist Lorna Barnshaw has taken the concept to a whole new level, a 3D one that is.  By utilizing 3-D scanning apps + printers, Lorna was able to create 3D replicas of her selfies, reminiscent of something you’d confuse for a piece of a Pompeii ruin.

image

Lorna told WIRED magazine,’I wanted to see how easy it was to replicate a small part of myself using only accessible tools + devices.  Generating + materializing a digital representation of myself as though anchoring my digital existence in the physical world.’

Although 3D portraiture has been attempted before, it’s monochrome palette rendered it useless.  Color gives the pieces the necessary depth, unique to one’s face, delineating the nose from the lips, eyes et al.image

Barshaw mentioned how critical color is in capturing the true essence saying,  ’We see + experience the world in all its color, triggering the memories + emotions that make us human.‘  Yet, as much as the artist values the human touch involved with selfies, which according to her are often about that moment, environment + emotion, the tactile quality of the the sculpture is still incomparable.

But for as much as I like all that’s tangible, can you imagine the amount of cracked ‘faces’, littering city streets, over the short life-span of instant gratification, like that of Instagram?

To set your weekend off right, here’s Beyoncé‘s ‘Party’ video, featuring J. Cole for #FlashbackFriday.  Queen Bey’s looks throughout, hit high notes, one after the other, + with friends like that, I’d party all day, everyday.  Don’t you just love Solange‘s look too, turning it out on the turntables?!

Note to self:  If ever I mow a lawn, it must be wearing a mustard fur jacket + Maison Michel Lace Ears to do it right, right?

Enjoy!

For #ThrowbackThursday, here’s Romeo Void’s ‘Never Say Never’.  Released in ‘82, upon listening, I was easily transported to a smoke-filled room, complete with sweaty walls + red lighting, while slithering between many characters, until my eyes caught the sight of …  Then suddenly, blah, blah, blah.

Wish Beth Ditto did a cover of ‘Never Say Never’, she would so kill it!

Enjoy!
