Crème Caramel on Nowness.com

Part Three of the NOWNESS #DefineBeauty series, in ‘Crème Caramel’, directed by Canada, we get to witness how a man sees the woman of his obsession.  Canada’s Nicolás Méndez + Lope Serrano deconstructed the sensuality of the female form from the mundane to the profane + the obsession behind it.  As for their inspiration, Serrano told NOWNESS, ‘When you are obsessed with someone, it’s not just with that someone—it’s with the shape of the hips, the color of the nipples, or the shade of her hair when she comes out of the shower.’  Yet, Serrano explained the a crème caramel was the perfect metaphor for a hetero male’s view of the female body as ‘something sweet, tender and beautiful.

Featuring drawings created by Serrano, with the climactic soundtrack by French band La Femme’s ‘La Femme Ressort’, you get that Seventies ironic feel of both innocence + sex appeal.

Enjoy!

A day with a glitch is always good, especially when it involves Röyksopp & Robyn in music video for ‘Sayit’, an exclusive premiere for H&M Life.  In the video, pop star Robyn + techno duo Röyksopp share a love for shoes and melancholy, amongst car wrecks, barbed wire + angry dogs.

Set in an quasi-apocalyptic cold industrial space, Röyksopp’s faces are covered by hoods while Robyn wears a dress which she found to be scary enough, as she never wears them.

Be on the look out for Röyksopp & Robyn’s Do It Again tour dates for this Summer.

Enjoy!

Bubble Wrap Paintings Imitate Impressisonism With Just A Pop

Who knew that bubble wrap, which can amuse for hours but also torment some four-legged friends, could also be a great medium for painting?  Lucky for us, artist Bradley Hart shows us below, with his renditions of famous paintings like Mona Lisa.

image

Yet, Hart doesn’t paint on top of the bubble wrap, as one would assume, but rather, fills the bubbles with paint, giving it an initial Pointillist appearance.

image

But the genius behind it all, is what happens when you pop the paint filled bubbles.  Below, we see the same famous painting, but this time, it has an Impressionistic quality to it, showing a melting Mona.  Personally, I prefer the popped version, don’t you?

Here are more of Hart’s paintings.

SS/12 Collection ‘Giger’s Goddess’ For #ThrowbackThursday

image

image

For #ThrowbackThursday, with the recent death of the brilliant H. R. Giger, here’s Malgorzata Dudek‘s SS/12 collection ‘Giger’s Goddess’.  As an homage to the late genius, with his prior approval, Dudek transferred his cultural influence onto fabric.

Although a lot of Giger’s imagery can be perceived as dark + macabre, plenty of beauty still manages to break through.  Dudek approached this ‘hidden’ beauty with feminine elements throughout her collection including ruffles, petal hemmed layers + corseted, as well as long body con looks.image

Of the many Giger prints, the Giger ‘Li’ print was seen on an elegant skin-tight gown, while the 3-D Giger baby heads from ‘Landscape XVIII’ adorned the back+ train of a hauntingly beautiful black, skin-tight gown.

Laser-cut leather elements, inspired by H.R. Giger’s airbrushing were seen throughout the collection.  Metal sunglasses by designer Slav Nowosad, inspired by Giger’s ‘Birth Machine’, accessorized part of the collection.

As to why Giger, Dudek explained, ‘My desire with this collection is to honor H.R. Giger, pay him tribute, + show how his influence resonates in the world of fashion.  When I started sketching this collection + planning the fabrics, I couldn’t see it complete without elements of H.R. Giger’s artwork.  And what better way for me, as a designer, to honor a man who’s Biomechanical vision has massively influenced architecture, film, music, tattoo art, fashion + industrial design.’

How wicked is this fashion film ‘.JPG’ for Jan Philipp Gerlach’s Graduate Collection 2014?

Location, location, location, right?!  What about the taped lines on the floor balanced by all the lines of the windows + interiors?  As far as the collection goes, the loose silhouettes, all have unisex appeal.  The fabric’s patina + occasional crinkled texture, lend themselves to a futuristic sensibility further amplified by Friederike Jäger‘s music.  Some pieces are highlighted by a geometric print while others are cleverly fastened with a single Overalls Latch Clasp Closure.

Besides, anything with smoke + time codes is always good!

Enjoy!

Scott Campbell: Adoptive Ink on Nowness.com

Get ready to be inspired + moved by this morning’s film based on the power of mentorship + the positive lasting power of a tattoo.

Presented by NOWNESS, Free Arts NYC, a non-profit organization providing arts education for the city’s underprivileged youth + artist Scott Campbell, famous for most of Marc Jacobs’ tattoos, created a collaborative ‘karmic mentorship’ inspired by the permanence of tattoos.  One afternoon, ten kids from the program + 10 volunteers met up at the studio + after telling their stories, the kids drew their names on the volunteers + Scott tattooed them on.  Campbell said, ‘Every time the volunteers look at the tattoo they consider the kid, + believe in them. It’s a nice reminder to be generous + not take yourself so seriously.’

What sparked the idea for the project was the feeling of support + confidence Scott’s friends gave him during the early days of his career in California.  ’When I first started tattooing I was just some kid in San Francisco until one of my buddies kept bugging me to tattoo him because he really liked my drawings,’ said Campbell, whose own celebrity status is masked by his humility, with a clientele that includes Helena Christensen + Penelope Cruz.  ’It catches you off guard sometimes, when people feel you’re more capable than you believe you are. It made me want to be the person that he thought I was,’ which is what this whole experience hoped to accomplish + I think did, in immeasurable ways.

The session was part of the Free Arts NYC Annual Auction, hosted by Marc Jacobs.  A book of temporary tattoos, a Scott Campbell + Marc Jacobs collaboration, is sold at Bookmarc stores, with all proceeds going to Free Arts NYC.

Get inspired + enjoy!
