Fashion From A GIFferent Perspective ‘In Bloom’

If in space, what’s a girl to wear? Well according to stylist Anna Meedham + photography duo Meinke Klein, nothing is more befitting than looks by Simone Rocha, Meedham Kirchhoff, Erdem + Dries Van Noten – at least for the GIF project, ‘In Bloom’. The last installment of SHOWstudio’s Flora series, we see models from different perspectives, surrounded by flowers in motions similar to that of rollercoasters, indoor waterslides + spiraling down the ‘rabbit hole’ like Alice in Wonderland.

Hair Stylist Soichi Inagaki, totally nailed it by making the model’s hair look almost alien-like by creating a structured + angular chignon, punctuated by very short blunt bangs.  Make-up artist Laura Dominique’s touch of light make-up with iridescent skin, a light bronze blush following the high cheekbone line, with no eyebrows, light copper eyeshadow + lip complimented the overall looks very well.

I could totally see these clothes as the thing to wear in space, especially the mesh white dress with grey bodice overlay and the shiny gold dress over light blue-gray skinny sweatpants/leggings.   And the angle in which those white shoes were shot in GIF 1 is just sick!  Where can I get a pair?

How fast can you tell time?  Well, Halmos New York + their Dexter Sinister Watch Wyoscan 0.5 Hz puts you to the test.

But how does this work, you ask – by the reverse-engineering by casio with a tiny computer replacing existing electronics + programmed to slowly render current time from left to right across liquid crystal display, completing 1 cycle every 2 seconds.  Luckily, the speed is adjustable. If still confused press play above.

Bags With Geometric Flair Take You To The Caribbean For Spring

image

(photo: Paula Foresti)

There’s no mistaking designer Paula Cademartori‘s inspiration came from The Cayman Islands for her S/S13 bag collection.  The bags throughout never fall short from embodying the beachside vistas, summer sunsets and natural materials such as palm  + rattan.  Featuring patterns + structured shapes with great attention to detail, playing up their 1950’s nuances with modern lines, including the milled buckle with engraved PC initials, jewel-chains on the shoulder straps and the hand-made inlays on the top handles, these bags are bound to be on everyone’s ‘must have’ list for when it starts feeling hot again.

Made of nappa leather and sometimes suede, with the occasional lizard patchwork motif and gold studded detail or shining glittering fabric and reflecting calf, what’s not to love.

With a color palette that ranges from bubblegum, sky blue and banana yellow, don’t you just want to break out your bikini and sunnies, hoping your premature preparation brings back Spring just a lot faster next year?  True, the bags tend to be on the structural side, which isn’t a bad thing at all – blame Paula’s industrial design background for that one –  but by having soft curves in the form of soft front flaps, for instace, they’re lines are softened.

These are definitely the types of bags you’d build your look around, not the other way around.

Deborah Lippman Teases With ‘GIRLS’ Inspired Nail Colors

Now, I don’t know if you, like me, when word of ‘GIRLS’ surfaced in the beginning , I wasn’t buying it, especially with the second-hand nepotism on the coattails of famous parents.  But like most, I immediately surrendered and became hooked, making me to think a lot, especially about relationships.  The show gave us a moment of pause to really dissect seriously damaged relationships, with others + especially, ourselves.

Now, although Season 2 doesn’t air until January, Deborah Lippman does us a favor by paying tribute to ‘GIRLS’ and collaborating on a nail polish line with Lena Dunham herself.  This could possibly satiate my appetite for a few more weeks – I love ‘GIRLS’ + I love my nails, so what’s not to love?

Now many might argue that enough is enough with the marketing of shows + films through makeup, albeit for nails, body or face, is getting a bit ridiculous + who wears them anyway but I used to think the same way until I found myself buying the ‘FROG PRINCE OF BEL AIR’, from OPI’s Muppet series, go figure (well, I love Kermit, green + glitter).  In this case, I think it’s very apropos considering each character has started a fashionable debate and not always in defense, like Hanna’s anti-fashion grandma-chic look , Shoshanna’s mall chic in her peace sign emblazoned snuggie and any ‘assembly line’ trend, Marnie’s ‘I’m uptight but at least I look pretty and have a REAL job to Jessa’s ‘I’m a free spirit + can damage whomever I want with no remorse, but it’s okay since I have mystique’.  Lena Dunham (‘Hannah’) gave it her seal of approval by saying:

“Deborah Lippmann’s colors are irreverent and classy and I’ve always coveted them (and stolen them from my mother), so who better to embody the ‘Girls’ spirit in polish form.  I’ve been wearing Hannah like it’s going out of style.”

As far as the colors created for each character, I think they all work, except I can see Shoshanna more in a mint nail rather than lavender.

Check Out The Amazing Illustrations By Hubert Kolodjeski Of Some Of Fashion’s Finest

Anna Piaggi

Hubert Kolodjeski‘s illustrations of famous fashion notables and one famous author, created for Polska magazine, truly ‘raise the bar’ in a whole new direction.  Although stylized, I love how they all have a primitive feel with all the dot shading, patterns and organic shapes.  The fact that he chose to do them only in black + red truly makes them pop.

How Different Patterns Can Play Nice Together, By Manon Kundig

When I first came across the pattern play in Antwerp designer Manon Kundig‘s ‘Bowerbird’ collection, I was simply floored.  Inspired by the strange Bowerbird from the tropics of New Guinea + Northern Australia, this bird is simply a hoarder that amasses colorful scraps in large quantities which is exactly how the collection looks.  Other inspirations included mashed up global visual inspirations that draws from subcultures, Google and the Moroccan immigrants in her hood – She’s particularly obsessed with Google images.

Full of contrasting vignettes comprised of hand marbled printed silk, beaded faux fur, lace gloves + socks, sequins + synthetic fringes, you truly get lost in Manon’s surreal reality – Her choice of silhouettes, cuts and prints makes this all tangible.  Love the models’ faces covered up with silk scarves which in some cases (L), giving one the appearance of a landscape when up against a different pattern.

A Walter Van Beirendonck protégée and selected for Wallpaper* Magazine and NJAL’s Graduate Directory 2012 (Manon is a recent Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Art graduate), with a collection that plays so greatly with textures, bright colors + print, this is one designer to definitely keep your eye on.  If that’s not reason enough, this self-portrait (below) with Manon hard at work, should do it – very honest.

Here’s i-D’s i-Do, shot by Zoe Bulbeck, as an homage to Jessie Ware‘s trademark double bun worn brilliantly on her album cover release ‘Devotion’, as seen here.

image

But it doesn’t stop at just the hair either – after the i-Do, makeup is then applied to replicate the softness of Jessie’s face, which is a great way to off-set such a severe + neat do.   This short film for the ‘Devotion’ double bun look i-D recreated, thanks to the talent of hair stylist Amber Rose Peake at Dalston’s Blue Tit salon, is simply heavenly with Jessie Ware’s sultry voice in the background singing her ‘Wildest Moments’.

For those who find it hard to hit play, comb, part, pause, brush, play + pause again, to get that last hair to curl just so, you can read instructions here:

1. Straighten all hair to ensure the ponytail is flat, smooth and sleek.

2. Section the hair from top to bottom, whilst spraying lightly with hair spray and brush sections into a pony tail.

3. Secure the ponytail with a piece of elastic and apply a smoothing product, if necessary.

4. Apply the first doughnut, wrap hair around and pin. Make sure you hold a section of hair out of the ponytail for the final bun.

5. Apply the final smaller doughnut, wrap hair around and pin.

Two Of Hip-Hop’s Early Collaborators From The Eighties, Set-Up A Pop-Up Shop

image

In LES, Just In Time For The Holidays!

Yes, yes, yes, DOUBLE GOOSE + Cazal are setting up a pop-up shop in LES’s Prohibit.  Considered as the ‘only’ coat for Hip-Hop pioneers such as Run-DMC, LL Kool J + Rakim, the Double Goose coat never sacrificed form for function + vice versa.  Instead, it opted for both warmth, made of plenty of goose down + feathers and style, encased in a leather shell with the occasional genuine fur trim.  I’m sure DOUBLE GOOSE would fare well in a contest against North Face, as these coats are infamous for keeping you warm.

Then we have the genius German luxury eyewear brand Cazal from Berlin.  I’ve always loved the large structural frames with usual gold detailing but always found myself gravitating most to the ones with the color of, dare I say it, pink.  But you must admit, Cazal’s version of pink would definitely change your mind quick.

image

DOUBLE GOOSE will be available in various colors + sizes for both men + women and there’ll be plenty of Cazal styles available to choose from.  I say, do it up + get one of each.  The shop will be opened until December 23rd, so that gives you enough time to buy everyone’s gifts while keeping most of the money for yourself to spend, spend, spend at Prohibit.
