Unique Beauty + Eccentricities Through The Lens of Adrian Buckmaster

An Embarrassment of Riches Cover Image

Susanne Bartsch, legendary Queen of NYC nightlife since the 1980’s, refers to Adrian Buckmaster’s series as “almost a visual experience of a parfueriene, each image an essential oil beautiful, evocative, deeply + exquisitely self-defined, an experience you drink in long + slow “, which perfectly describes your first experience when setting your eyes on the photos of this master photographer In ‘An Embarrassment of Riches’ by Adrian Buckmaster, published by Glitterati Incorporated. Besides capturing the raw humanity of each subject, Buckmaster flawlessly captures + celebrates the human form, through the many characters contained within nearly 300 images.

ab1

As he inhales every inch of him or her with the honesty of his lens, the closeness shared with every sitter is made very clear. Buckmaster achieves an empathetic intimacy in capturing the various ways people adorn, alter + showcase their bodies in the pursuit of self-expression while addressing gender + sexuality with the utmost elegance. Compared to Toulouse-Lautrec by Bartsch, in Buckmaster sharing his fascination with people that are “often marginalized + misunderstood for the boundaries they push”, in living on the ‘fringe of society’, each subject’s delicate approach never results in a near miss but a dead on interpretation filled with love.

ab2

Through an array of costumes including hats, wigs, Victorian ruffles to tattoos, the diversity of the subject themselves grants Buckmaster no wiggle room to not capture the true essence of the person(s) before him. Yet, as you leaf through the pages, you can’t help but notice how his prowess in portraiture somewhat intermingles with imagery created by the great masters such as Caravaggio or even Édouard Manet, as seen below. You look at a lot of these photos + at first glance, you could swear you were looking at a painting.

With every pic, you have no choice but to linger + look at every inch of it. From the lighting, the very gaze of the subject, to a left foot slightly shifted to the right, you never question why but rather swell up with emotion knowing you have just witnessed greatness. Arranged in three movements: Imposing, Revealing + Inventing, the range of characters including Burlesque performers, ballerinas, families, + all types of tattoos + body piercings, Buckmaster manages to capture the essentials that define their individuality.

Irregular Choice Awakens The Force With Their ‘Star Wars’ Shoes

Image 1- square

Just in time for ‘The Force Awakens’, the latest Star Wars installment, now Irregular Choice is the next shoe company to find inspo in Star Wars for their latest collection. Yet, they’ve done so in such a way that I’m sure these shoes will sell out quick. No one has ever interpreted Star Wars in high fashion footwear like Irregular Choice has.

Featuring a 14-piece exclusive limited collection, with characters + imagery from the original trilogy, Irregular Choice owner + main designer Dan Sullivan told the Daily Dot,

“I have always been a big Star Wars fan + having had huge success with our seasonal character heels over the years it made sense to try + explore new collaborations with Disney. The collection itself has been in development since last year.”

And you can tell how big of a fan Sullivan is, based on his ingenious shoe designs + attention to detail, like these lightsaber heels below.  They flash when you walk + play sounds from the movies.  Really!

sw3

But during the process, Sullivan had to make sure all the designs met with the approval of Disney + he had to make “the characters look correct on specific dimensions + colors for Lucasfilm’s approval.”

“Also, making sure that every detail of the design [+] character is tied into the correct episode. We had to be completely true to each episode, for example you can’t use a print or character from one film alongside any print or characters that didn’t feature in it,”

Sullivan told the Daily Dot, adding,

“This is why we couldn’t [use] Yoda on our outsole prints, as we wanted these to be the same across the whole collection to tie it together, but Yoda didn’t feature in all episodes.”

sw2

I mean really, who would ever think to to put a mini R2-D2 as a heel on a shoe other than Irregular Choice?

Finding inspiration from frequent traveling + seeing different cultures, granted Sullivan the ability to, as he put it,

“let my imagination run wild + invent the most different shoes I can possibly think of that can accompany an exciting collaboration like Star Wars. I am going for intense shock factor, but still something wearable and affordable + I feel this collection represents both of them things. I am [a] strong believer in creating shoes our fans know they will not see other people wearing down their local. With Star Wars, I knew each style would be super limited-edition from the beginning, so these styles will be even more exclusive. It’s also very important for me to make sure this collection hits affordable price points so that the few lucky Irregular Choice or Star Wars fans can have their own Cinderella moment.”

Sullivan sounds pretty awesome.

So whether or not you’re a Star Wars fan, I’m sure there will be something unique for everybody.  But come October 30th, when the line is due to drop, in select stores + online at Irregular Choice, you better hope the force is with you, as I doubt it will be hard to keep these amazing shoes in stock.

Good luck + may the force be with you! (Couldn’t help it.)

Whoever Said Utility + Luxury Don’t Mix?

hmt

Trends come + go, but minimalist + utilitarian looks, seem to always withstand time. Be it for the love of simplicity, if not a political statement against the trend obsessed sheep, these days, function follows form in a fast paced world, full of new technologies sprouting every second, allowing for utility to become an esthetic necessity. For luxury womenswear label Homo Consommatus, although comprised of utilitarian pieces, they still find their fit into the context of contemporary style.

This ‘Cashmere Coat’, with it’s oversize fit, makes great use of color blocking, instead of taking the monochromatic route. Made of luxurious cashmere + baby lama knit, the shoulder detail + its hidden side pockets, is what makes this coat special.

hm2

Designer Alexey Soroki’s philosophical approach to fashion is such that prompts him to draw inspiration from unusual subjects like pollution, consumerism + the meaning of life, present throughout the label’s collections as themes. But his unique aesthetic is achieved by using unusual, innovative treatments, through experiments with luxurious textiles + new production technologies. His ‘Hearst Midi’ + Hearst Mini Dresses’ below, are such an example, in using silk jersey covered with polyurethane + a wool graphic application. If the polyurethane were cheap, it would not hang on the body the same way.

hm1

A label noted for significant work with the form, throughout the collections Soroki plays with proportions, with visible contrasts to the length, like this ‘Hearst Suede Skirt’ below. This suede mini skirt in a calming Sky Blue, has varied lengths all around + the trimming with plastic palettes, emphasizes its form that much more. And how clever to style it over the label’s maxi bodicon ‘Quote Print Dress’, made of nude peach silk jersey, covered with black quote prints that read “Why not to rock a fur stole during the summer” + “Size of heat insulation”.

hms

Like the suede skirt above, Homo Consummatus added depth to form with their ‘Cashmere Chain Coat’. Made of luxurious cashmere + trimmed with metal chains + silk ribbons, the design made with the chains gives the coat the look of having grooves, while the silk ribbon makes the coats cut pop.

For #TBT, The Video For ‘Verwandlung’ Is A Beautifully Bloody Mess

For #TBT, WAKE UP with Thomas Azier‘s disturbing video for track ‘Verwandlung’!

An homage to French erotic horror flick ‘Trouble Every Day‘ by Claire Denis, director Sander Houtkruijer opts for a grainy + low lighting look, perfectly setting the tone of the video. Featuring a mysterious woman locked in her apartment with chains, an admirer + passionate bloody kisses, what happens next is sure to make you flinch, just a bit.

So when you tie in those visuals, with the synth sounds of ‘Verwandlung’ (means ‘metamorphosis’ in German), + Azier’s beautiful vocals, you end up with a powerfully moving experience.

Enjoy!

Don’t you just love old school 8-bit pixel art, usually found in a Nintendo Gameboy video game? Now imagine wearing a shirt, with 8-bit people running across it, especially the guys, like this here by Lazy Oaf? Of course, that doesn’t mean us ladies can’t wear this shirt too!

want

Called the ‘Lazy Oaf Tiny Guys Long Sleeve Shirt’, made of premium brushed black cotton, Lazy Oaf’s soft spot for nostalgia gave birth to this very good looking + fun shirt. I think it would be a perfect piece to mix with different patterns or just by itself, with black pants or joggers, as above.

Get Entranced By Floating Points’ Video For ‘Nespole’

It’s about that time to take pause + what better way to do it than with this hypnotic video by Floating Points for track ‘Nespole’, off debut album ‘Elaenia’?

The way some of the sounds slowly swell but stop short with little piercing beats buzzing about, like curious bees, perfectly track dancer Kiani Del Valle‘s moves, through interpretive dance. Directed by Sander Houtkruijer, Kiani’s mimicry of sound, with elaborate moves, involving her whole body within a confined imaginary sense of space, follows each second of every wow, wow, zeeeep + zing sound, with flawless expression + synchronicity.

The track itself is just as beautiful in its simplicity + when you pair the dancer + sound together, the end result is perfect.

Enjoy!

Layering It On Thick With Miu Miu For RTW Spring

_MON0172

If there’s one thing I love is layering + the way Miu Miu did it for its RTW Spring collection is on point. There was plenty of layering sheer items over most looks including sheer colorful wrapped baby nightgowns, over vests with a checkered button down underneath or a short sleeved polo, paired with a long pencil skirt. Other times, you would see what appeared too look like a long sheer shirt dress, with a ruffled button placket peeking from under a sweater or, a mid-length sheer dress with a ruffled collar + patterned front panels, from waist down, over a buttoned down shirt under a simple jacket.  What was great about these baby nightgowns was how cheap they looked. They appeared like they could almost exfoliate your skin, but being Miu Miu, they’re most likely smooth to the touch.

Another layering example that made me smile was a sleeveless mid-length patterned dress with a peter pan collar over a velvet polo shirt with puffed sleeves worn on top of that checkered button down shirt again (row 3, pic 3).

m1

Patterns as usual, played a big role in this collection, which chimed in on its retro vibe. You could almost go back in time with these looks, but, the accessories fast forwarded them into the future. Either the models were wearing pointy stiletto heels with fabric ankle ties, sometimes in contrasting colors or patterns + other times, you’d see mixed pattern or textured boots, with front laces, just to name a few of the footwear styles.

The raccoon tail accessory in theory would sound like an off choice, when thinking of pairing it with a dress or skirt, but when you see the way that Miu Miu styled them, it all made sense.

m2

Keeping the hair simple with just a headband, along with a very strong lip in burgundy, accented with an electric almost iridescent dark purple in the center, played well with the variety of outfits.

Overall, the collection is quite beautiful + very wearable but my condolences go out to all the vintage shops out there. I’m certain many stylish chicks will end up raiding these shops for sheer anything, especially nightgowns, + fur stoles, to layer over their favorite Miu Miu look come Spring.
