Here’s a perfect example of why I love fashion films so much!

Premiering on Purple TV, the imagery, look + styling for artist Amanda Charchian‘s ‘Quand Vas Tu Rentrer?’ paired with musician friend Melody Prochet’s (Melody’s Echo Chamber) soundtrack, is just breathtaking.  Shot on 16mm + inspired by the erratic camera work of Bruce Connor’s ‘Breakaway’ + Guy Bourdin’s sculptural symmetry, you feel like you’re being transported into a lush Seventies world, full of mystery, sexy intrigue + surrealist hints, inside the United Artists Theater founded by Charlie Chaplin.  One scene in particular reminds me of Alejandro Jodorowsky‘s ‘Holy Mountain’ (below).

Brilliant!

Enjoy!

WANTED: Red Graphic Bracelet By Alyssa Norton

image

image

What I love the most about Alyssa Norton’s ‘Red Graphic Bracelet’ is its shape with a geometric bent.  A brass cuff hand painted painted red + white, is the perfect accent to any look, especially when it’s not the obvious minimalist or graphic look.  And as an added bonus, there’s a crystal that neatly rests atop the cuff.  Now, don’t go thinking I picked it because of its Santa colors, with the holidays in full swing – this cuff is timeless!

Alyssa Norton’s ‘Red Graphic Bracelet’ is available for purchase at Valery Demure.

Favorite Seasonless Rachel Comey Pre-Fall 2015 Looks

image

image

Pre-Fall or not, Rachel Comey stayed true to her ‘seasonless dressing’ by incorporating various textures, patterns, shapes + textiles into her collection.  There was a mohair woven long coat, a white shearling sleeveless jacket with black detailing while a black oil slick long dress with hints of a light nude illustration, made for an interesting evening look.  Patterns came in the form of an abstract paint pattern added to cropped pants, complete with piping, while magenta with black flowers creeped up from the ankle to the knee on the front of relaxed light blue pants.

image

There were shapes that played mostly with volume + silhouette, like a long black + white tunic over white cropped pants + a kimono style belted jacket in sweatshirt material, over white wide leg pants with a frayed hem.  The geometric bags throughout the collection were a great accent to the looks.

image

As for textiles, Comey’s love affair with denim came in many forms including a wide leg frayed hem jeans + a wide leg jumpsuit peeking out from a pink mohair coat, while linen + cotton popped throughout the collection.

Beach Bums AKA Strandbeests Invade Art Basel Miami

image

When I first saw Dutch artist Theo Jensen’s ‘Strandbeests’, his kinetic wind-powered creatures moving, my jealousy grew at a ferocious rate, knowing I won’t be able to see them at this year’s Art Basel Miami. Six kinetic creatures that eat ‘wind’ for power, with the largest measuring 42ft long, took over the beachfront. With skeletons made from PVC tubing, plastic bottles + recycled materials, ingeniously, each beast is able to move on its own with no trouble. The distance between the tubes, in fact, is what causes the motion of walking.

Then, I couldn’t help but remember something called the ‘Soda Constructor’, the Java-based physics engine, central to Soda Creative’s collaborative learning environment ‘Sodaplay.com’, that crudely replicated its form to look a little like a ‘Strandbeest’. Created by Ed Burton, (Soda Creative’s Research + Development Director in April 2000, later on, a 2001 Interactive Arts BAFTA award winner) Sodaconstructor is a construction kit for interactive creations using masses + springs. By altering physical properties like gravity, friction, + speed, curiously anthropomorphic models can be made to walk, climb, wriggle, jiggle, or collapse into a writhing heap. Although the example below only shows 4 legs, you have the ability to add more or less, depending on your preference to then relish in seeing your creation come to life. Now, Jensen’s, you could say jumped out of the computer or paper, + into real life, to just keep us all in awe on how far a person’s passion can take them.

But when I saw this ‘Strandbeest’ move, with its legs so close together, as seen in the homage video below by Alexander Schlicter,

Marcel Duchamp’s 1912 ‘Nude Descending A Staircase, No. 2’ (below)

immediately came to mind +  as well as a chorus line, similar to the one created for the SS/12 issue of a LOVE magazine editorial of the same name. Photographed by Solve Sundsbo in preparation for Louis Vuitton’s major retrospective at the Musee Des Arts Decoratifs, celebrating the history of the brand’s bags + shoes, the effect is quite beautiful in its simplicity.
