RECYCLED NECKLACES FIND INSPO FROM CINEMAX SERIES ‘THE KNICK’

image

(‘Otolaryngology’ Necklace)

Aren’t these great + mad sick?  If I didn’t know any better, I would swear these necklaces by Spanish brand FEEAS looked to Cinemax’s great new series ‘The Knick’, starring Clive Owen, as inspiration but not the case at all.  For those who don’t know, ‘The Knick’ is based on the professional + personal lives of the staff at New York’s Knickerbocker Hospital during the early part of the twentieth century, + back then, they would perform surgeries at cold blood.

According to the designer, these pieces have been created reusing items bought in antique shops + flea markets, with most of them having been in existence for more than a century.  Now although they’re all necklaces, the designer meant for the pieces to be small objects of art, with a somewhat macabre appearance + that’s not very hard with a syringe + pliers in the mix.

image

(‘Syringe’ Necklace)

FEEAS believes that these objects have their own stories, having been used by people who lived in other parts of the world + at other times.  In doing so, the designer has tried to retain their spirit subtlely intervening in them, with the idea that in a future someone would want to return it to its original use.  Sure some appear to be ‘more functional’ than others but when combined with one’s wardrobe, they take on a new form if not representation with new reinterpretation.

image

(‘Pliers’ Necklace)

Here’s the designer’s inspiration for the pieces is ‘not that people embellish themselves with more or less aesthetic objects; but to dress up without any complex in intangible + invisible sensations. In summary, I want people to attach to the lapel or hang to the neck nostalgic dosages, memories, dreams that graze nightmares, paranoias, discomforts + doubts. What each one prefers in that moment.’  Of course, due to the age of each piece, they must be handled with care.

For your very own FEEAS piece, they are available for purchase at NOT JUST A LABEL.

Miuccia Prada Thinks You Shouldn’t Just Text Anybody But ‘Somebody’

image

Even the art for this new app is very Prada!

As resistant as Miuccia Prada’s been towards delving into the digital realm like most of the other fashion houses, she’s decided to stop fighting it for the eighth Miu Miu Women’s Tales installment, with the help of performance artist Miranda July.  And what a dive it is!

image

Debuting tonight during the Venice Film Festival, July has created an app called ‘Somebody,’ (btw free on iTunes today) which ‘is the antithesis of this utilitarian efficiency that tech promises,’ according to a press release.

image

This just goes to show you how July was the perfect person to crack Prada as she too is as intellectually grounded with great foresight.  What’s even better are the would-be VIP guinea pigs for the app invited to Friday’s dinner Prada is holding in honor of the whole artistic, digital mind-bender

image

which include Kirsten Dunst, Lena Dunham, Dakota Fanning, Felicity Jones, Edward Norton, Jenni Konner, Joel Cohen and Francesco Vezzoli.

You have to love the overall feel + look of the app – it has that retro feel with bubbled boxes + text, sharing a resemblance to those probably found in a note, had you been passing around notes to tell someone you had a crush on them etc.

Here’s how it works:

The app is a message service, but instead of sending the message to the user’s intended recipient, it goes to the user standing closest to the intended recipient. The actual recipient is then supposed to deliver the message to the person in real life. Put more poetically in the Prada statement: “‘Somebody’ works when you send a message to an intended recipient, a friend, a lover, a family member.…The message goes not to the intended recipient, but to the person geographically nearest in proximity to the intended recipient. The messenger, most likely a stranger, delivers the message verbally, acting as your stand in.”

image

Of course, July has made a short film, also to be screened in Venice, that illustrates uses for the app — breakup, make up, etc. – which makes you wonder, where was this app when you needed to break up with so + so that time – Thanks Miranda!

Check out Grimes’ new video for ‘Go’ that was originally written for Rihanna.  This is definitely the type of song that would make me feel a breeze especially with that hook.  Featuring Blood Diamonds, the video was co-directed by Grimes + her brother Mac under the production alias Roco-Prime, + was inspired by ‘Dante’s Inferno’

Grimes shared this statement with pitchfork about the video:

‘It’s our take on Dante’s inferno. The circles of hell reflect more contemporary issues though.  We shot a bunch at the salton sea which is basically an apocalyptic wasteland filled with dead fish because of human carelessness, the bullet hole hallway a la korn freak on a leash etc etc.   If you look closely you can find clues.  Haha, but in the usual fashion it is also abstract enough to just be a trippy visual accompaniment to the song.’

I love the Mad Max/Game Of Thrones aspect of it, with the ‘knight’ + the big sword in the desert while later, playing in a black lit tunnel showing Grimes + other characters dancing + contorting their bodies.  Now, wouldn’t you agree how the beats during the lit tunnel scenes pair so beautifully with the tender side of the song?

Enjoy!

Wake up to most people’s fantasy of being part of the badass clique in high school, especially with Charli XCX as the leader!  Well that’s exactly what happens in Charli’s music video for her new single ‘Break The Rules’, which is all about high school rebellion with a hint of movies ‘Jawbreaker’ + ‘Carrie’.

The video starts with Charli + friends ditching school to go shopping at LA’s infamous Trashy Lingerie shop.  They then end up at their high school prom, with lots of shots of Charli singing + dancing on top of a school bus in between. Rose McGowan plays the role of the tense chaperone, who if you remember, played Courtney, the original cold-blooded queen in ‘Jawbreaker’.  In true ‘Courtney’ fashion, Rose dumps a bucket of Pepto colored paint on the crowd, which doesn’t phase them one bit as they continue to carry on.

‘Break the Rules’ taken from her forthcoming sophomore album, ‘Sucker’, will be released on October 5th.

 Enjoy!

As if Instagram couldn’t get any better, today they launched ‘Hyperlapse’, their new video app.  So you know how you always wondered whether or not you had a tremor, with so many shaky videos, well now with this new app you’ll be able to shoot films like a real filmmaker, as seen in the video above.

According to Time magazine, ‘Hyperlapse’ uses image stabilizing algorithms to iron out the jolts + tremors that typically mar timelapse smartphone footage, creating what the company calls ‘a cinematic look, quality + feel—a feat that has previously only been possible with expensive equipment.’ Users can set playback speeds at 1 to 12 times the speed of the real world, collapsing prolonged shots into a few speedy seconds.

Instagram wrote in its announcement of the new app, ‘From documenting your whole commute in seconds or the preparation of your dinner from start to finish to capturing an entire sunset as it unfolds, we’re thrilled about the creative possibilities Hyperlapse unlocks.’

Of course, the app is already available for iPhones at the iOS App Store but sadly, in the works for Androids.

Ever watch those sci-fi flicks where the filmmaker tries to give you a glimpse into what life would be like eons from now by tapping into advertising for a specific product, giving you a sense of that era’s lifestyle esthetic – think ‘Minority Report’ or sadly, Halle Berry’s ‘Catwoman’ with it’s anti-aging cream Beau-Line?  Well, that’s exactly what Telfar Clemens, the avant-garde designer, achieved for his unisex TELFAR line with the 2014 video look-book “TCTV” for W Magazine above.

Clemens’ second collaboration with director Babak Radboy of the notorious meta-brand Shanzhai Biennial takes a key premise — that TELFAR is not an underground label but a global mega-brand with ridiculous ‘Old Navy’ commercial appeal, was just the beginning.  Of those involved in the project, they were given the task to produce the greatness they’re known for but blindly, with nothing tangible leading the way.

Visual effects team NTROPIC (Christina Aguilera, Gucci, Overstock.com) were only given the instruction that there should be “a lot of post production.” Likewise, the New York-based sound designers at c5 studios, the go-to facility for Martin Scorsese, were given 109 tracks composed by artists Ryan Trecartin + Lizzie Fitch, + instructed to ‘make it sound like there is a lot of sound design,’ with game show + video game sound effects enhanced by the almost robotic voices of the male + one female models.  Meanwhile, the video was edited without backgrounds, the 3D built without the video, + the sound designed without a final edit.

“TCTV” epitomizes the TELFAR motto: Extremely Normal™ from a parallel universe not quite our own, with its over-the-top normality.

Enjoy!

When It Comes To Love, These Prints Speak Louder Than Words

image

The ‘Eros Ludic Editon N.3’  FW 14/15 collection by Sans Tabù’ is said to be celebrating sensuality + a joyful physical connection, thanks to the naughty prints, that might make some blush.  All-over print silk sleepwear + intimates that include Kimonos, Short Slips, Culottes, PJ Pants + Shirts + Camisoles make up the collection.

image

Mirror Mirror, Pillow Talk + Love are the names of the three patterns used depicting nudes+ couples in sexual positions , which showcase moments of intimacy + playfulness.  So it shouldn’t come as a surprise to know that the prints come in the colors of Sunlight, Dawn + Midnight.  I especially love how the prints of the nudes + couples incorporate color into their overall design.

I sooo adore Spanish actress Rossy de Palma.  Not only is she hot + talented, she’s just everything + anything wrapped up all-in-one, especially when packaged in Assad Awad‘s F/W 2012-13 Metamorphosis’ accessories collection, in the fashion film above.  A fashion film by Sergio Ojeda, Rossy kills it wearing leather, feathers, chains + metal spikes + sometimes, all at once, with plenty of attitude!

Enjoy!
