Manish Arora’s Tribal Candy Store

image

When designing his Fall collection, Manish Arora must have been eating a lot of candy.  Models came out with looks that had literal prints of candy including cupcakes + rainbow sprinkles.  The sneakers also depicted a sweet tooth with a mix of bright colors with a heart on the tongue while hats were topped with a bright pom poms + shapes including fluffy moons.

image

The color palette also depicted a everything sweet with bright saturation, just like all artificially flavored + colored candy.

The collection then shifted, showing tribal looks, worthy of any Bolivian, or Peruvian woman with style.  There were Peruvian embroidered skirts worn with belted jackets, usually with a decorative belt.  Another strong tribal look was an embellished capelet over a top with decorative cuffs + striped leg warmers over baggy pants.

Buy Luxury Brands At Affordable Prices With Muchness

I don’t know about you but when it comes to online shopping, I usually slow down my poor little ‘Pooter’ with the many windows open trying to find the best deal out there.  But what better way is there to do comparative shopping, right?  Well, in one word, Muchness.

image

You see, Muchness, a NYC fashion start-up, is a new shopping platform created to help women everywhere buy beautiful designer clothing at affordable prices.  Think of it as a ‘Kayak meets Pinterest’ community for discovering designer brands on sale, but it does a lot more than that.

With Muchness your shopping experience is very streamlined.  Sure you can filter your searches by designer, category, size + price (see below), but with Muchness, your preferences are saved so that sizing, color + brand info doesn’t need to be inputted every time.

In other words, if you wanted deals from Ann Demeulemeester to Elizabeth + James to Zadig + Voltaire (three of many brands carried), rather than being bothered by badly edited random pieces, Muchness provides you with the best offers around.  Plus, with inventory updated daily + luxury merch being the only type allowed onto the site, it’s a ‘win win’ sitch, don’t you think?

Offering women’s, men’s + kids’ apparel, with home items coming soon, there’s also a “Featured People” page (below) where users can add collections + follow other fashionistas too, a lot like Pinterest.   Hooked yet?

Here’s a video discussing fashion illustrator Tony Viramontes who Anthony Vaccarrello recently mentioned as an inspiration for his Fall 2014 collection.  Tony perfectly captured the glamour + excess of the Eighties, granting him jobs with elite fashion labels including Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel + Versace.  Look at how perfect he made his subject’s imperfections look.  Unfortunately, he was taken from us by AIDS in 1988, dying at the age of 31.

For more on Viramontes, check out the book Bold, Beautiful and Damned: The World of 1980s Fashion Illustrator Tony Viramontes’ shown above.  The book is also available on Amazon.

Anthony Vaccarello Makes Turtleneck Dickeys Sexy For Fall

image

Legendary Illustrator Tony Viramontes was noted as a huge inspiration for Anthony Vaccarello’s Fall collection.  The sensual excess of the Eighties, so perfectly portrayed in Viramontes’ work, was brought to life by the designer’s signature asymmetric minis + hip high slits, but also through the structured ruffles along the front of mini dresses + as well as the use of red + black.  There were however, a few surprises.  Turtleneck dickeys were found in the collection but not the way you would think.  For Vaccarello, it made perfect sense to pair dickeys with a more exposed look like a strapless dress, giving the once stale accessory a modern redux. Another sign of the Eighties + first for Vaccarello, were his pleated pants.  Some pants were paired with Perfecto jackets as well as tucked in blouses with no bra, making Vacarello accessible, to most women who do not have the lean build of runway models.

Modern-Day Snow White Inspires Red Valentino For Fall, Rotten Apple + All

image

Having a penchant for fairy tales as inspiration, for Fall Red Valentino looked to a modern-day Snow White as its muse.  Luckily for us, the collection did not contain a single literal piece, other than the red bow headband.  Instead, there was a pop-art approach to all the looks.

image

All the pieces had a sweet innocence to them, with one bearing a slight irony.  There was a rotten apple sweater with a half-tone pattern, alike Lichtenstein’s many works, which worked very well when paired with leather shorts (row 2 look 3).  An overall heart pattern decorated both sweaters + shorts, while a denim romper looked adorable with black socks + yellow heels (row 3, look3).

image

But the true stars of this collection are the accessories, hands down.  I mean, how cool would it be to attend a dinner, party or late night hook-up with a bag that says ’ The Fairest Of Them All’ across it?  What about bringing a bag that says ‘Once Upon A Time’ when you’re going to break up with someone?

The rotten apple made another appearance on two small bags, while the traditional Snow White uniform was dissected + simplified into a large clutch, in yellow with a blue flap + of course, a red bow handle (above).  The heels were also touched with pop art, with yellow stilettos embellished with expressive red lips + another pair with all-over print of a woman’s face sitting on ornate heels.

since launching in 2008, ASVOFF is described as not only a competition of short fashion, style + beauty films but also a travelling international event showcasing feature films, documentaries, conferences, performances + installations – making it a must-see on both the fashion calendar + the film circuit.

As a fashion film fest annually held at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, with several satellite editions, including Rome, London, + Bilbao, it’s only natural for ASVOFF to have it’s first American satellite edition in New York.  Co-hosted by French luxury conglomerate Kering + co-Presented with FIAF (French Institute Alliance Française), with the films of Bruce Weber, Mike Figgis, + Stuart Blumberg followed by a special tribute paid to Jerry Schatzberg’s 1970 cult pic “Puzzle of a Downfall Child” (below), starring Faye Dunaway as a former fashion model

on a downward spiral, this event is surely not to be missed.

After the film screenings on March 14, you should stick around for a Q & A with Mike Figgis (Leaving Las Vegas) + Jerry Schatzberg (Scarecrow, The Panic in Needle Park) moderated by Andrea Marcucci Founder and CEO of Maag Dretti “LAST LOOK”.

On March 15, the festival will end with a tribute + special screening of a restored print of Jerry Schatzberg’s 1970 cult pic “Puzzle of a Downfall Child” (below), starring Faye Dunaway as a former fashion model on a downward spiral followed by Q & A with Schatzberg.

The film screenings all start at 7:30pm + will take place at FIAF (French Institute Alliance Française) at Florence Gould Hall (55 East 59th Street between Madison + Park Avenues).  But you better hurry + buy tickets here for March 14 + March 15, as I’m sure they’ll sell out quick.
