A Designer Who Literally Takes To Photoshop For Fall 2012

For several years now, plenty of fashion glossies have been criticized and crucified for making their curvy covergirls, voluptuous starlets / harlots ( both seem to be the case these days, most of the time anyway!) and ‘healthy’ artists skinnier than they really are through the magic of Photoshop.  But for Anrealage’s A/W12 collection, Photoshop is used on it’s designs and textiles.  True, other designers have already applied Photoshop to their textiles by reflecting the same digitized image in opposite directions – Mary Krantzou, Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy and the untouchable, Alexander McQueen – but these designs are full of whimsy and different.

Part of Tokyo’s Fashion Week for A/W12, Anrealage’s designer, Kunihiko Morinaga’s reinterpretation of Photoshop definitely receives high marks in my book.  By taking the same silhouette, in this case the skirt, and repeat / ‘pile on’ in a gradation of color (hard + static ombre) with the same closures, be they buttons or belts, just makes the piece refreshingly unique and a definite standout.  (Love the ‘piled on’ collars on the blue dress above!)

Then there’s the issue of the ‘smudge tool’ used in a cheeky way for Anrealage’s textiles – so good in fact that you need to take a double-take.

(even the helmet isn’t safe from ‘the smudge’)

Beth Ditto’s Collection For MAC Cosmetics Is Finally Coming Home – Here She Is Above, In The Behind-The-Scenes Video With Her Momma, Getting All Done Up For Her Photo Shoot.

(Living for the picture above with surrealist elements and don’t get me started on the complimentary nail art – Gorgeous!)

With all the buzz surrounding Yayoi Kusama’s capsule collection with Louis Vuitton which has us all seeing dots, isn’t it just so apropos that The Gossip’s lead singer Beth Ditto, has an upcoming makeup collection designed for MAC which includes a polka-dot face powder?  Finally due out June 7 (next Friday), the 25 piece collection is sure to be a top seller with

items bearing fun names including Opaque violet nail polish called ‘Vagabondage’, traffic-cone orange lipstick called ‘Booyah!!!’ and polka-dot face powder called ‘To The People’.

And what a great fit, if you ask me, I mean, just look at Ditto’s face – her expressive eyes, little black bob and cupid bow lips – just begs for makeup and high drama as only she knows how to serve, flawlessly with no apology.

Mommy, Mommy, Can I Too See Dots Since The Louis Vuitton And Yayoi Kusama Capsule Collection Doesn’t Come In My Size?

Of Course They Can, With This Version Of Lewis Carroll’s Alice In Wonderland With Artwork By Yayoi Kusama.

Produced in collaboration with the Kusama Studio, Tokyo and Gagosian Gallery, this version of falling down the rabbit hole and the goings-on there entitled ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ will definitely take you there conceptually and beautifully.  While enlisting the help of Yayoi Kusama’s eye for dots and at times, very primitive drawings,

the sprinkling spurts of typographic surprise just enhances the experience that much more like shown below.

Luckily, it’s hardcover, making it an instant keepsake for years to come.  Available for purchase at Mattress Factory online.

Now if your little one’s craving for dots is not quite satisfied with the book above, here are a few more items that might settle their design nerves just a bit.

Here’s Anne Claire Petite’s ‘Organic Cotton Crochet Tea Set’ from Holland.  Not only will they channel Kusama but also Olek.  Available at little baby company.

What about this ‘Devon’ top by fafa-online shop – love the sheer contrasting turquoise and white wing-like sleeves?

What about these Sayang shoes or even Nana leg warmers that could easily be used as sleeves, also available at fafa-online shop?

Either way, mommy won’t be able to upstage their little ones with some of these dotted pieces similar to Kusama’s dot-obsessed masterpieces.

If you can’t get enough previews of Louis Vuitton’s collaboration with brilliant Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, (especially with the premiere of their first capsule collection dropping June 12), here’s a little something to make it all better – at least for a little bit.  Both Kusama and Vuitton created the video above, entitled ‘Princess and The Polka Dots’, featuring her signature all-over dot pattern present in most of her work.

Enjoy!

A Peek At Snow White & The Huntsman’s Costumes Makes Me Want To Watch It That Much More

For movie ‘Snow White & The Huntsman’ starring Charlize Theron as evil Queen Ravenna and Kristen Stewart as Snow White due out this Friday, costume designer Colleen Atwood went all out with her designs.  Unfortunately, a lucky few (waaa…excluding myself), managed to see them up-close and personal at a recent LA pop-up shop , on view until June 3!  Embellishing her costumes with unusual details including leather pailettes, paper mache and embroidery, the delicacy of each piece could easily well pass for a haute couture gown, especially those worn by Charlize.

Here we see Charlize’s wedging dress with paper mache accents and embroidery.

The black oily gown (R) looks almost reptilian yet each ‘scale’ is made of leather paillettes with a collar and slight peplum edge in on the hips, look like porcupine quills.  The feathery number on the left creates a pattern of sorts by putting darker feathers on top of lighter feathers – and look at that collar…serious drama!

Here, she uses edible beetle wings along the bodice, skirt and sleeves to play off the iridescence of the gold skirt detail.

All in all, I just can’t wait to see these babies come to life.

Finally, Azealia Banks’s debut ep ‘1991’ digitally dropped today thanks to the folks over at Interscope/Polydor – the physical units drop June 12 so mark your calendars.  Take a listen to one of her new singles ‘Van Vogue’ produced Machinedrum .  Digital tracks available here.  Killer album cover right!?

DAYGLO REFLECTION | BOBBY WOMACK FT. LANA DEL REY

YES! Music icon, Bobby Womack, has teamed up with breakout star of the year Lana Del Rey in an unexpected collaboration for his 27th studio album, The Bravest Man In The Universe, which is due for a June 11 release via XL Recordings. Too good – check it out (above)!

Couldn’t agree with you more on that one – would be great in one of those Seventies, early Eighties 007 flicks.
