Farewell to THE original Phenomenal Woman, Maya Angelou.  She was both an inspiration, a great intellect + a master storyteller with biting wit, but always with much grace.  And what a voice, right?!

Here she is reciting her poem ‘Phenomenal Woman’.

R.I.P. Maya Angelou – we will miss you.

WANTED: Honor Mint Backpack

image

Talk about 3D florals!

The Honor Mint backpack is obviously very unique.  It’s not so much it’s shape or color but rather how it’s covered in tiny net flowers in a pale light minty blue.  At a glance, you might think you’re looking at ruffles but you’re not, as seen below-they almost look like butterflies.  With complimentary buttah soft veggie tan leather deets + an inside + outside pocket, its rose gold metal accents gives it that special touch.  And with measurements (approx.) of Length 40cm/15.75in, Tall 44cm/27.25in + Depth 19cm – 35cm/7.5 – 13.75in, it’s the perfect size for something this functional to look so pretty.

Honor Mint is available for purchase at miista.

The Magic Gap on Nowness.com

Wake up to ‘The Magic Gap’ by fashion photographer + director Guy Aroch, part of the #DefineBeauty NOWNESS series which explores that much talked about subject about the space between women’s legs.  A topic that’s compromised many women’s body image, as if to say, ‘the bigger the gap, the thinner you are’, Aroch takes a more romantic approach with lots of tongue-in-cheek (couldn’t help it!).  By asking a lot of people what they thought ‘the magic gap’ was, their answers became the voiceovers you hear along with the director’s signature sun-kissed filter images, reinforcing that vintage feel.  On the definition of what ‘the magic gap was’, Aroch wanted to be that fly-on-the-wall, an obvious voyeur, saying, ‘Most people that didn’t actually know the answer—99% of them. And I didn’t tell them either.’

Aroch wanted to “diffuse” the controversial topic as he tells NOWNESS, ‘It was more a comment on the mysterious fixation women have, because as a male, I didn’t even know it was a thing.’  By retreating to his famous romanticized esthetic, often found in the pages of Harper’s BazaarNuméro + GQ, Aroch cast his regularly photographed models including Chanel Iman + Gigi Hadidto illustrate this controversial fixation with this thigh gap or the structure of the pelvic bone, along with the dialogue, the size of ‘the magic gap’ becomes irrelevant, allowing the viewer to just appreciate ‘gaps’ of all sizes.

Enjoy!

Now Pharell Has A Great Kaws To Share His New Girl

imageThat’s if you like to smell good?

To say Pharell Willliams has bad taste is inconceivable, so when I read about his collaboration with COMME des GARÇONS to create a scent, I wasn’t surprised.  Pharell is living proof how style isn’t learned but how it all has to do with impulse + instinct.  Ironically, the scent is called ‘GIRL’ like his recent album released earlier this year, but as Pharell told WWD,’There should be no lines — I learned that from Comme des Garçons.  Hence, Girl — for girls + boys. We just found another way to say unisex.’

But not everyone can say they were asked by COMME designer Rei Kawakubo herself on what they were interested in doing next?  Williams was like, ‘Wow! Rei Kawakubo is saying to me: ‘What are you going to do?’ And I was sitting in their fragrance room, + she said, ‘You want to do a fragrance?’ + I was like ‘Sure!’ And the next thing I knew, we were off to the races!”

Just look at him, in an outfit showcasing both his + other artists’ design + creation.  His jewelry, including the knotted pearls, is all remade Chanel jewelry-he had the costume jewelry recast in precious materials, making it real, not faux. ‘I love Chanel,’ he said (who doesn’t?!), pointing to a brightly colored Chanel belt that he’s customized to suit himself.

His ‘DIY’ adidas Stan Smith sneakers bear drawings created by him, artist Takashi Murakami + Japanese producer + co-conspirator of Billionaire Boys Club + Ice Cream labels, Nigo.  His jeans are from the Boys Club while the black carbon fiber hat is a collabo with adidas minus the resins + his floral patterned jacket is by Japanese label Sacai.

House + Holme designed the bottle, logo + packaging featuring bold, cartoonish artwork by the artist Kaws, a (surprise, surprise!) friend of Williams.  The larger bottle will retail for $135, while a travel size version will cost $30.

Sadly, it launches first at Dover Street Market London on Sept. 1, then it’s our turn in the States on Sept. 5.  It will be sold at all Dover Street Markets — in Tokyo, London + New York — + at Sephora, via an exclusive partnership, in the U.S., Canada + France.

Natasha Khan: Under the Indigo Moon on Nowness.com

Sunny glazed films are far better than glazed donuts, especially when it’s YMC-styled fashion film ‘Under The Indigo Moon’ by Bat For Lashes songstress Natasha Kahn.  Inspired by Patricia Arquette’s trashy, playful, US motel aesthetic in film ‘True Romance’, Kahn captures her sepia-coated road trip, driving along the snaking Sunset Boulevard with her LA-based buddy, former Devendra Banhart drummer Gregory Rogove, on 16mm, for that genuine gritty feel.

The dreamy + carefree soundtrack created with Beck, serving as the perfect backdrop, takes you by the hand with each + every sound, from the drums, electronic xylophone + anything else synthesized, while Natasha’s voice echoes + tickles.  But don’t think for a second this is just a one-time deal for Natasha – the singer hopes to make filmmaking a long-term pursuit.     NOWNESS asked Kahn if she would consider creating a feature length film + she replied, ‘I’m writing a screenplay for a short for FilmFour. It’s a really dark, gritty, family based drama, with hints of magic realism. We’re going into pre-production soon with a view to make it into a feature-length film in the next couple of years.’

Hoping to make it a musical + visual collaboration with her producer Dan Carey, Natasha’s desire to tell stories through film + paintings rather than just music has led her to currently take illustration classes, putting Bat For Lashes on pause for now.  Of course, with naming David Lynch as her lynchpin director + Patti Smith as a musical influence, there’s no denying we’re in for many more treats from this singer.

Enjoy!

‘GIF-iti’ By Insa Might Make You Dizzy

image

When offline meets online like this, who would expect such genius?

After collecting images of his graffiti artwork from around the world, designer INSA animated them as GIFs + calling the series ‘GIF-iti’.  The series is comprised of graffiti wall murals that are each hand painted + photographed in sequences of 8 frames.  Sounds easy, right?  Some of the GIFs come complete with 3D-effects, which is no surprise if you’re familiar with graffiti artwork.

Simply amazing!  Below is more of INSA’s ‘GIF-iti’.
